Title: The Dark Knight Returns/DC Animated Movie
Post by: ChrisMC on August 07, 2012, 12:40:05 PM
Part 1 comes out on DVD/BluRay September 25th. The graphic novel this originates from is pretty much the reason we have the grittier Batman we all know and love these days. From the looks of the trailer, it seems to be pretty faithful to the source material. Peter Weller sounds pretty badass as Bats.  :batman

I heard about this awhile back.  Looks great!

Trailer is great.  I was worried that the style of the recent Batman animated series wouldn't mesh with this story, because the source material is so dependent on Frank Miller's iconic art...but it looks fantastic.  Far and away this is my favorite Batman story, I cannot wait to see it.

Anyone else see this yet?  Just watched it the other night and it was awesome.  Man, I'd love to see a live action version of this someday, but this was really good.  Only drawback is it's just part one.  But they do end it at a good spot.  Any Batman fan needs to see this, even if you haven't read the classic comic.  :batman

I'm a huge fan of the comic, but I was a little disappointed with this.  I found the voice acting just okay, and the unique language of the book (the weird slang of the teens and mutants) didn't translate to the screen for me. Also, I didn't feel the gravitas of the return of the Batman (or Two Face & Joker for that matter) quite the same way as it is portrayed in the book.  Some of these scenes are shot for shot right out of Frank Millers book, almost to the level that this could be considered a motion comic, but for me it just didn't work.  It's probably because I've read the book so many times, I guess, that seeing it animated just doesn't jibe with my internal voices that's ingrained in my memory from all the repeated readings.

Overall while I'll certainly watch part 2 when it comes out, this won't bear repeated viewings for me the way the book has achieved classic status in my mind. I'd recommend wholeheartedly, if you like Batman even a little and haven't read this, to definitely pick up Frank Miller's trade paperback of this before seeing the movie. I think it's the best Batman story ever written.

Definitely agree with Rico on one point...this would be an incredible live action movie.  And I still can't wait to see the epic Superman battle at the end of part two of this.

The main thing missing for me was Batman's internal dialogue....it's so integral to the story that I missed it here. Peter Weller is fine, but damn, how great would it be if it was Kevin Conroy?  :batman

Hmm, I've read the comic but I still found this quite good.  Not quite the same as a comic of course, but still very enjoyable.

absolutely, I meant to mention that too but forgot...in the battle scenes with the mutant leader especially I found the lack of the internal monologue just a gaping absence.  Was there just no way to include it without it sounding like he was actually talking?

I guess I'd still recommend it because the story is so good, but like in so many cases with translations to film, the book (or in this case, graphic novel) is simply way better.

Part 2 coming in January!  Oh yeah!!

When Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 was announced, we knew we'd have to wait a while for the second part, but it's actually coming sooner than originally thought. The official release date for Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 is January 29, 2013. Below you'll find the cover art for the highly-anticipated film along with the trailer, in case you missed it before.

The second part will include all new featurettes, 3 bonus cartoons, a digital comic, and a sneak peek at the upcoming Superman: Unbound animated feature.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 picks up where the first left off with Batman having returned to Gotham with an all new Robin, however not everyone is welcoming him back to the streets. Gotham City's police are on a manhunt for the Batman as is the newly released Joker. As Batman attempts to stop the Joker one last time, the United States goverment teams up with Superman to bring the Dark Knight down for good.

Peter Weller returns as the voice of the aged Dark Knight along with Ariel Winter as Carrie Kelly, the new Robin. "Lost's" Michael Emerson provides the voice of the 'cured' Joker and Mark Valley will play the Man of Tomorrow, Superman.

I'm glad they are releasing part two so soon. I wonder if a box set of parts one and two will be released at that time? Part one is the only DC animated film I don't own yet.

Part One was really good and so I'm really looking forward to this release! In fact this animated feature was way better than Dark Knight Rises in my opinion.

Year One is pretty good Will but I think Dark Knight Returns is the best of the Batman one so far.

I really want to watch them but I may wait and see if they release them together. And to me Year One seemed to be more od a Jim Gordon story more so than a Batman one.

Wow! They released the download before the movie release date? I'm tempted to do that but I'm not willing to pay for it twice. I want my Blu-Ray!

They are starting to do this occasionally now.  They did it with "Prometheus" too.

It was up for awhile.  I'm not sure why it's down now.  I have Prime but can't access it either.  Oh, well.  It will be out soon anyway on DVD, etc.

I cannot wait to see this...I know I was a little harsh about part one but books three and four of the comic are both so, so, so great that it would be almost impossible to mess them up.  Anticipation is high...

Saw part two last night and loved it!  Really, really well done in my opinion.  Great voice work, animation, and some amazing action sequences.  I think between this and part one it's my favorite animated DC movie to date.  And boy - do I want to see a live action movie version of this story someday!

my copy arrived in the mail yesterday and I hope to see it tonight. Glad you enjoyed it Rico as I would be really disappointed if part 2 was not as good as part 1.

Picked up Part 2 on BluRay. It was just about perfect....the fight with the Joker in the Tunnel of Love, awesome, brutal...And Superman and Bats, it's everything I remembered and more. Since I have read the book a zillion times, I guess I don't miss the voice over. They really paced this well, and I really enjoyed Peter Weller as Batman. I would almost love to see a sequel, but since I've read The Dark Knight Strikes Again, I think they should leave it where it is. These 2 movies together could combine to really make one of the best direct adaptations of Batman that's been done.
