I rather enjoyed the 80's movie...had to watch it a few times to understand what was happening, though! LOL!
Looking forward to listening to the podcast sometime this coming week. :)
I'm not waitung until work tomorrow, I'm listening to this one tonight! :)
I remember being really creeped out by this movie when I was a kid. I've watched it over again as I've gotten older. That big fat slimy guy definitely weirded me out the most.
What exactly is the spice and how come they had to wear those things in their nose?
Z
Great show guys, tons of info and I'm defintiely gonna try and read through the original novel finally! Perhaps the audio version would be a good choice.
Other movies and shows Ian McNeice has been in: (check IMDB for full listing)
- Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls
- The Beautician and the Beast
- Doc Martin
- Doctor Who
- A Christmas Carol (The Patrick Stewart version) He played Fezziwig.

Spice is a cinnamon smelling powder that is produced by young Sandworms, called sandtrout:
The spice originated on the planet Arrakis, where it was produced deep beneath the sands. It was created in a process whereby the fungal excretions of sandtrout would mix with water to form a pre-spice mass. This mass would then be brought to the surface of the desert through an explosion of pressure, and under the intense heat and air of Arrakis, melange would form. When the worms died, sandtrout would be released into the sand, and the cycle of creation would repeat.
The nose plugs of the Freemen stillsuits was meant to capture moisture from exhaling that could be recycled for potable water.
Thanks for the explanation. I was never really quite sure what that was all about. ;)

Yeah, the stillsuits are a cool construct. They are designed to capture 90% of water loss from a persons body and recycle it to be drinkable, all within the suit.

I meant to mention you in the podcast, a couple days before we recorded I heard your podcast when the Dune game came up, and you mentioned you couldn't get through them. The latest audio book is very well done, like a play almost.
Zarabeth, I totally remember him in Ace Ventura now! I knew I had seen him somewhere else prominently.
Excellent podcast gents. Enjoyed it immensely. I had forgotten about much of the TV series though i do remember it as being very much set in a studio. I had also forgotten how far the Baron was different in the film from the book. Very iniformative and a damn good listen
Thank you
Yeah, the Dune game isn't exactly canon as far as I read. In that game you could play as Atreidies, Harkonnen and Ordos. To my limited knowledge house Ordos was only mentioned in passing in some supporting material and never made it into the original novel.
Great real time strategy game though! Limited by today's standards but a good one nonetheless.

Hey Chris-El!
Yeah Ian was great in Ace Ventura and Beautician and the Beast. He must have been really good to put up with Jim Carrey and his antics. He does comedy well. ;D
This was an excellent podcast put together and hosted well! THANK YOU for all your hard work!
Enjoyed the podcasts.
I was impressed with the set design and costumes of the movie and the timeless organic approach to science. Folded space - the only way to travel :)
Thanks all!
Chaps, what a great podcast this was. Really enjoyed the fact you both didnt agree with each other all the time. Always good to hear different opinions about the same subject.
I have not seen Dune in about fifteen years and once again listening to a podcast has made me want to go out and watch both the film and the tv series.
Great show guys.
Cheers Meds!
Can anyone really agree with Bryan ALL the time?? ;)
Thanks Meds, high praise coming from you. Had a blast doing it with him, and it was really just a great nerdy conversation like I have with pals over beers. Looking forward to doing it again sometime.
Well thank you Chris, and Bry. I always think when doing a joint podcast if they come across as if you are both sitting there together chewing the fat over a beer then it's the best kind of show. More please Gents.
PS Chris you will be coming close top beating my guest host tally at this rate lol
Being disagreeable is a point of pride. :)
I wanted to thank you for a great show. I'm a bit behind on catching up. I haven't read Dune-but think I will give the books a chance now. I had a roommate in college who was a Dune fanatic.

I read at least five of them many years ago. Fair warning, they tend to start off pretty slow with a lot of exposition, but once the action starts to happen, they're amazing. If you can stick it out through the setup, the payoff is great.
Enjoyed the podcast, gentlemen. I have seen the Dune miniseries but never the movie and I have never read the books. You guys covered a ton of things about Dune but I don't think I would have the time to get into the book series. Maybe I should just read the original book and be done with it?
Yeah Wil, the first book is a standalone story.
I've not read the books, but did see the film and then tv series. I find it really interesting that the weirding modules weren't in the books, or the navigators.
I also forgive the film for it's whispering exposition... it certainly gives it a very unique feel.
Though perhaps if I had read the books first I would feel the same. Some things about the Harry Potter movies really grate on me when they stray from the books. There again some lines in the film really feel like they *should* be in the books.
It does seem the film tells almost a parallel universe version of the books. The fact the whole heart plug scene (which I agree is gross) was not in the book... or the bug squishing thing is really interesting. The characters in the books sound like they have more grey to them.
I've not seen the TV version since it first aired in the UK ages ago. Though listening to the clips I had totally forgotten about Ian McNeice was the baron (Dr Who, Doc Martin, etc).
Interesting and informative podcast, thanks for doing it :)
Cheers! Navigators are in the book, it was just their presentation and depiction in the film that is very different from the novel.
In that they are barely portrayed at all! Just sort of mentioned, and that if you go and try and catch a glance of one, you get your spacing privileges revoked.
I just listen to the podcast last night, great job guys. I saw the Lynch version back when it was in the theaters and saw it again on cable. I also enjoyed the sci-fi Minni series as well. I was OK with the original, I think I was able to get most of it even thought I never read the books. I think they should have simply made the original into a TV mini series like everone was doing back then. I recall that mini series based on best selling novels where the highest rated programs back in the mid 80's. I got the sound track on cassette tape back then too, I thought the music was aussume, I loved the rock group Toto back then.
Great Job on the Podcast Chris and Bryan. You both really covered Dune well, and had lots of great information. Suspect it must have taken a bit to cover and time researching.
Thanks alot Jeff...this was definitely time consuming as I re-explored the novel, the movie, and even Road to Dune, and I know Bryan worked his tookus off too...but it's one of my favorite universes so it's not really that tough to do!

A LOT of miles on the bike re-listening to the audio book. :)
