Title: "Jack Reacher" - film
Post by: Rico on July 10, 2012, 03:39:03 PM
I don't know a lot about this film except that it's based on a book series I think.  Say what you want about Tom Cruise but the guy knows how to make an entertaining movie.  Due out on 12/21/12

Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me.

And sure enough, ex–military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. He knows this shooter—a trained military sniper who never should have missed a shot. Reacher is certain something is not right—and soon the slam-dunk case explodes.

Now Reacher is teamed with a beautiful young defense lawyer, moving closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. Reacher knows that no two opponents are created equal. This one has come to the heartland from his own kind of hell. And Reacher knows that the only way to take him down is to match his ruthlessness and cunning—and then beat him shot for shot.

Jack Reacher

Height: 6ft 5in
Weight: 220-250lbs
Chest: 50in
Inside Leg: 95cm

Wears a 3XLT coat

Now, I know the author has said that whilst Cruise doesn't possess those intimidating stats and ain't that an understatement, he brings his own 'presence' to the role.  I hope that's true, I've read a few of the Jack Reacher novels recently and they're nice, easy reads, good stories and on par with authors I also like such as Kathy Reichs and both Jonathan and Faye Kellerman.

I will say, that of the novels I've read, One Shot, which the film is based on, seemed the least likely for the movie treatment, so I expect it to vary greatly, though was the one I've read that came closest to be able to get a 15 certificate.  If this does become a franchise, I'd like to see some of the harder, darker stories told, even though the 18 certificate would be required to tell those tales.

I do hope Lee Child is correct though, that Cruise does pull it off, but in all honesty, I'd have rather seen a film based on the books with different names, than a 'Jack Reacher' film with an actor whose nearly a foot shorter than the character he's meant to portray.

I've not read the books but I have heard about the physical differences in the character.  Doesn't matter much to me since I don't know the character.  Maybe just view this as an "alternate universe" Jack Reacher.  :)

Just saw this movie this afternoon and enjoyed it.  Just a fun, action and detective type of story.  I thought Cruise did fine.  I know he doesn't resemble the book character but he seemed like a pretty cool bad-a$$ to me in the movie.  Anyway, I'll be curious to know what someone thinks who has read some of the books.

I have loved Tom Cruise since the early days and can't remember ever seeing a movie of his that I didn't enjoy. Some of my favorites of all time star the man...Risky Business, Born on 4th of July, Jerry Maguire, Vanilla Sky...the guys had an amazing career and keeps making movies I want to go and see, like this one and the upcoming Oblivion.  Chalk me up as a fan.

I will always think of him as Sean in 'Taps'.  :)

Yeah that movie was filmed near where I grew up, at the Valley Forge Miltary Academy.  It was the first time I remember seeing locations I recognized from where I lived on the big screen.  That was a great movie too.

I've read all 17 of these Lee Child books, usually in 2-4 readings each - like someone said above - easy reading, hard to put down for me.  The Reacher series are really detective stories using the ex-Military Police character as the unique factor.  I think that what appeals to readers is the guilty pleasure of the "common man"  (all 6' 5" of him) over bureaucracy and bad guys.  He is the white knight that comes to the rescue of anyone who needs his help, and if that person is a pretty gal, then we just wait for the eventual liaison scene.  In many ways, he is like the Indiana Jones of detectives.

Yeah, I went there for half a year.  :)  Where did you grow up?  We lived in Berwyn back then.  My brother is still in Haverford.

Villanova for twelve years then Ardmore. One scene shot off campus (i think the one where theyre confronted by "townies") for Taps was pretty much down the street from my house
