Title: Password managers?
Post by: Rico on July 04, 2012, 09:12:10 AM
Anyone use any password managers in Google Chrome?  I'm trying to move over all my settings and stuff from my old PC and it's kind of a pain in Chrome.  Chrome Sync didn't work right and I have to enter a lot manually.  Thinking of trying Lastpass or something similar.

I am using Lastpass, for a couple years now, and it is rock solid for managing passwords and keeping them safe. I definitely recommend it. Though I hear Keepass is also good too.

Lastpass also works very well in iOS, right in the safari browser via Bookmarklets.

So, does Lastpass take all your current passwords and change them?  Then does it fill in passwords when you visit various sites and forums with the new ones?

Lastpass will take all your current passwords from the browser your currently using. It will not change the passwords for websites unless you change the password in that website directly, which it auto-detects any changes. Lastpass also has tools that you can use to generate passwords. And then when you revisit the website it will use the changed password.

Yeah, that sounds familiar.  I set it up once and might install it again.  So far, moving passwords over has been the biggest pain of my new PC setup process.

mhm, usually is. Which is why I moved to lastpass. That and it was getting insane remembering all these passwords and accounts.

I've been reticent to use a password manager, but with all the breaches happening over the last few years I feel like I need to start storing more complex passwords. LastPass seems to be the way to go (even accordin to Steve Gibson over at Security Now), my one question is: how do you access your password store from a public (or shared or friend's) computer and also how does the mobile app work?

Well, you can access the vault of passwords from the website which have the same security as the apps and will only stay logged in for X minutes.

The mobile app lets you access your vault in a more touch-friendly format and has its own built in browser so you can just launch the website that way.

I use Keypass in combination with skydrive / dropbox - so my encrypted passwords can follow me around to each machine I use and stay in sync.  It seems to do the business.
