Looking forward to listening to this, though it will be next Monday by the time i listen. LOL
Hi guys, I downloaded and just listen to the podcast yesterday evening at work. this was one podcast I could not postpone for latter, I had to listen to it that day. IN fact it was the first podcats I listen to that day. I loved the Planet of The Apes movies when I was a kid. I saw all 5 movies on TV in the 70's and watched the short lived TV show. The original movies were first shown on CBS as well as the TV series, then they all went into syndication after that. I never watched the cartoon series, I believe I saw one episode a long time ago.
I did have some of the merchandise back in the day, I remember some action figures and a Dr Zaies piggy bank that was about 3 feet tall. I think I may have had some of trading cards too.
I really enjoyed all the podcast cometary that you guys presented, especial some of the behind the scene facts, how some of the same props were used from other TV shows. I really liked listening to the audio of the movie trailers too, they were just assume.
I have seen the Tim Burton version back when it was in the theaters and my brother has it on DVD. I thought it was OK at the time, just different. However me and my brother loved the new rise of the planet of the apes movie, we both loved it too and so did my girlfriend as well. she also like the Tim Burton version.
anyway excellent job Rick and Mike thanks for all you work on that podcast.

Gonna download this tonight! Hope to listen to it at lunch Tuesday!
I LOVED the Apes Show!!!!! My dad showed me the original when I was about 8(Early 70's) I fell in love!!!!!! that might have started my attraction to Post Appocalyptic stories!!! I do have the TV Series on DVD too!!! I liked Burton's because it was viually Stunning!!! the make up was INCREDIBLE!!!!!!
Guys, you did a great job on this show!!!! Thanks so much for doing it!!!!!!
Rob

Very enjoyable episode, I need to rewatch the series and actually see all of them this time. Alas, Netflix doesn't have them...

Loved the podcast, but I've always been a fan of the Apes movies. I like 'em all including the TV series. One thing that you guys didn't mention that I think the franchise really has going for it is the music. Jerry Goldsmith did the soundtrack for the 1st (and 3rd) and it is fantastic. He used a lot of strange instruments and sounds and It really sets a mood for the film and captures a bizarre and seemingly alien (interestingly enough) landscape. The soundtracks are all good. Leonard Rosenman (of "Star Trek IV") did the soundtrack for "Beneath" and "Battle" and they are excellent as well. Lalo Schriffin ("Mission: Impossible" and several "Dirty Harry" films) scored the TV series to great effect. Probably the best thing about Tim Burton's remake was the Danny Elfman score.
Film Score Monthly has released all the original sequel soundtracks and the TV series soundtrack in the last couple of years if you're interested. I don't know if they're still available or not.
I also always loved the cinematography of the original film. It is beautiful, especially on Blu-ray and adds a real sense of scope to the film. The trek through the desert with Goldsmith's score is just brilliant.

Yeah, the funny thing is we had talked about it before we recorded and wanted to include it, but we just ran pretty long generally talking about the 5 movies. You're right about the score for the first movie especially, the atonal score was very unique. And yeah, the blu-ray looks fantastic. We used the opening theme for "Escape" because that's my favorite.
Listening now, you guys are doing a GREAT job!
oh yes, I so love the music in these films, but we ran out of time. Perhaps a VARTOK segment is in order?
Loved the Apes podcast. When I was a kid, they used to play all the movies for one of those week long summer TV runs. Used to love that.
I am curious to see what direction the reboot takes in terms of themes. The Apes movies were big on social commentary, but this new one looks like it's going to explore more science, evolution, intelligence.
sorry about the name mix up Chris, my post was getting long and time was short so I was trying to finished up, I think I got you confussed with one of the other podcasters. I hope that you and rick will be able to do more podcast in the future.
Chris, dude, I used to love channel 11 in NYC!
Just started listening, this is a great cast guys. Really enjoying it. You know what would be a good guest cast idea - one devoted to Charlton Heston's forays into Sci-fi in the 60's and 70's. Soylent Green, Planet of the Apes, the Omega Man...

I grew up on it, man! Plus it's also where Star Trek TNG aired new episodes.

That's funny, we were kinda throwing around talking about the Omega Man, which I just recently got on BluRay, what a funky movie. And Soylent Green is so cool and weird as well. That's a good idea, I'm a HUGE Heston fan.
To get off topic - Soylent Green is one of my favorites. I even read the original story by Harry Harrison 'Make Room!'. The movie has two of my favorite actors - Charlton Heston, and Edward G Robinson. How can you miss!
"It's people!!! TELL THE WORLD!!! IT'S PEOPLE!!!!!"
Great Podcast Guys. You did a great Job covering the franchise and gave each move a good run down, well done for covering such a big topic. I have only seen a few of the Ape movies and a little bit of the TV series, but have a good understanding of the stories now. Never did see the last Ape movie as I thought the Apes looked to realistic, and just preferred the more classic Planet of the Apes Look I guess :)
Great podcast, Rick and Chris! :cheers
There are more Apes films than I'd realised but I think I've seen more than I knew.
I actually quite liked the reboot before last but I don't know that it compares with the originals in any way. My preference in these things is always the post-apocalyptic elements but as more of these were introduced, the general quality seemed to go down which was a bit of a shame. Think what could have been achieved if both elements had been held to a consistent high!
Had lots of fun with this one guys. I've seen the first two movies, haven't gotten around to all of them (though I know I bought my dad all of them for his birthday once).
Thanks for the kind words. Chris and I dug it. What an awesome franchise!
Yes, very glad everyone enjoyed it. I was very nervous, it was my first time!
Chris, I din't realize that was your first podcast. You guys both did a great job and you had lots of great info about the movies. I haven't seen all the original 5 movies yet but I did see on Amazon that you can get the blu-ray set for $25!!!

It's well worth the money! Lots of cool extras as well as the movies themselves.
Great podcast!
I learned a lot more than I knew before. I've only seen bits and pieces of these movies. I do have the Tim Burton version and I thought that one was pretty good.
I found it interesting that Charlton Heston ends up playing the dying elder ape. I also loved the end of Space Balls where the apes are on horseback watching the three guys come out of Mega Maid's nose. That was really funny!
Very enjoyable podcast Chris and Rick. Regarding Nova - it wasn't what she said, it was how she said it.

Thanks again. Chris and I had a great time. Vartok, would you be willing to do a planet of the apes music segement? I would love to hear that from you!
Great show guys. Wow...I totally remember watching these with my dad (John Wayne's twin brother who also happens to be a sci-fi fan). The nuclear bomb one freaked me out too. And the last of the 70's movie was sooooo horrible/tragic. I remember the two apes getting killed. Terrible ending. Thank God Star Wars came along and lifted our spirits. Seems like Sci-fi back then was so depressing. :) Enjoyed your review though!
Yes, the down endings did get to be a bit much. The last original movie tried to fix that...
Glad you enjoyed the podcast. Your last one was really awesome, I just revisited Measure of a Man last nite. Still holds up. You were right about that 80's tv tag with Riker and Data at the end...they may as well have freeze framed it with the credits!
Thanks Jen! Chris and I are working on our next podcast..... heheeheheh!
one word: JERRY!
Hmm..Jen gave me an idea there... "That 70's SciFi Show".....
Chris and Rick, you missed one of the sequels on Netflix
planet of the Apps (2010)
didn't see too many apes though
V
haahahahah!
