Title: iPads for Orangutans
Post by: Jen on March 01, 2012, 11:30:27 AM
I heard that zoos are giving iPads to orangutans. They get very bored in captivity and iPads, with orangutan friendly apps installed, keeps them entertained. Like Cocoa the Gorilla, who taught others of her kind how to sign, these orangutans are teaching other orangutans how to use this device. How's that for intuitive?! ;)

BTW, part of me finds this very cool the other part finds it very creepy. Haven't these people seen Planet of The Apes?! We're creating scary people-ish-like robots on one side of the world and aiding the rapid evolution of apes on the other side. If we're not careful the two will form an alliance and either kill us all, as the Flight of the Concord song: The Humans are Dead might suggest, or they'll make us their caveman slaves. Not a positive outlook in either case. Just say'n.

We've been heading about this a lot since it's occuring at the Toronto Zoo just east of the city. I agree Jen, it's cool in a way (insofar as it really proves how intuitive the interface is) and a bit unnerving at the same time.

Makes me feel a little bit less impressed about how well my two year old son handles my iPad.  He knows how to unlock it, go to Netflix, find his shows in the instant queue, and start them up on his own.

But I guess if a monkey can do it...no biggie.

So, I get bored too in my captivity (work). Does that mean I'm entitled to a free iPad? :)

This is just the first step for them taking us over!  :)

I guess an iPad would be more fun than this....
