I imagine the earth's magnetic field somehow deflects or redirects such harmful bursts as this. The resulting Auroras Borealis and Australis ought to really light up this week..
Maybe the excess energy that gets through has overloaded our power grid causing temporary blackouts.

According to Karen Fox at NASA Goddard Space Center, "NASA alerted operators of their satellites that the CME was coming, so those operators can take whatever shielding precautions they can."
"They also recommend that astronauts to stay home and avoid space walks"

If I remember correctly when the last big storm hit about six years ago not much happened.
If by "nothing much happened", you mean visible aurora as far south as Maryland (~ 38 degrees N latitude), then, yeah... ;)
The night sky had a wicked glow of red to it. Living in Colorado now, and despite a thin sliver of waxing moon, no night sky magic this time around. :(
