Title: "Comic Book Men" - tv series
Post by: Rico on January 15, 2012, 10:52:04 AM
A new, unscripted series from Kevin Smith is starting up on AMC on Feb. 12th right after the return of "The Walking Dead."  I don't know much about the series so far, but I like Kevin Smith so I will give it a shot.

Comic Book Men - Watch it on AMC Starting Feb 12 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTInvZtdS1I#)

Anyone check the first episode out of this?  I thought it was kind of fun.  Got to see some of the inner workings of Kevin Smith's comic shop and some very odd people trying to see the staff stuff.  Neat little show.

It's pretty cool, I like the guys in the store...the freaky people selling crap seems a bit contrived, but oh well, it's reality TV.

It's a good show if you are a comic book shop goer like I am.  Those are definitely the type of people who both work there and visit sometimes.

We haven't had a comic shop here in about 5 years...but yeah, that's true. There are some unique peeps that pop into thos eplaces.

I found myself laughing a hell of a lot more than I thought I would. really enjoyed the "in shop" banter between the guys. And some really cool items coming through the doors. Especially loved the 6 Million Dollar Man doll...**sigh** I love nostalgia....

Looking forward to next weeks...

I finally sat down and watched the first episode and I have to say that overall I really enjoyed this series. I found it funny and entertaining. There were a few times where I felt as if they were "being" mean to people, and honestly that would be my only complaint. Now I know they are all "geeks" in their own right but does that give them the right to be mean to other "geeks", I don't think it does but that might just be me.
This episode has three storyline going. One was Kevin and the employees doing a video podcast, which I mentioned. They talk about various geek topics or stuff that would happen in the store.. then the second storyline had people come into the store and try and sell things to them. This is where I think they were cruel to a few of those customers (of course they didn't do in front of them but when they would leave). The final storyline was two of the employees and the guy who just hangs around have a competition to sell the most stuff at a flea market. Again lots of making fun of flea market "type" people. But it had it's funny moments. Some heartbreaking moments was then one of the guys had some Star Trek collector plates, which I collect and he was selling for $10 (crazy good deal), but when the none employee guy went over and smashed two of the plates on the ground (trying to be funny) I was not laughing. It was hard to watch someone who didn't care about these things just smash something that I put a lot of love and value into.. and he did it just to be an ass.
Other then a few faults as I mentioned I did enjoy this first episode and I'll be back to watch the second one this Sunday.

Never thought about that Kenny. Yes, I can imagine how disheartening that must be to watch. As for the people coming into the shop to sell....I'm not sure how many of these are genuine customers and how many (if any) are deliberately sent in to act 'kooky'. I get the impression that the sellers are all sent in by the TV people...

Yeah it's tough to tell how much is "produced" and how much is real.. also if it's produced are these "real" people or actors playing a role. But does that make it okay for them to make fun of them after they leave? I mean there are real people out there who are just like some of the sellers.

I didn't find it really that mean spirited, especially with some of the people that were trying to sell stuff - like that Chucky doll lady.  I mean you have to admit, she was not quite firing on all thrusters.  I felt the most sympathy for Ming at the Flea Market - but he showed them in the end.

I found this on A&E's AMC's website so I'm going to try and watch it today. As Captain Kirk would say, "Sounds like fun."

I loved the first episode and will continue to watch.  I'm a huge fan of all things "View Askew", seen all the movies, own the DVDs, and listen to many of the podcasts on a regular basis.  They're streaming this on AMC's website for free so if you need to catch up it's a good way to get current.  I have a feeling that this might not be for all folks here, Kevin Smith tends to cross the line quite often and I'm sure he and his buddies will push the limits of what is considered acceptable to mainstream audiences with this show.

I absolutely loved the Antiques Roadshow element of the program and hope that part continues to be a main focus.

I haven't watched the show, don't really plan to. However this morning I heard on the ForceCast a segment where a guy brings in a lightsaber and claims it's screen used from ESB and their STAR WARS "expert" said it was a stunt from Empire and worth $7000. LOL! It's a pure fake replica, not even a real Graflex, and if it was steal would be worth $200K. What a joke.

You'll probably find that price is for a 100% certified and validated saber.

The expert could only say he was about 90% sure that it was a stunt one from ESB with some of the internal "gubbins" removed to make it lighter for Mark Hamil to roll around with reducing risk of injury. He did say it was made from the correct flash gun parts...and everything apart from the weight seemed genuine...

I'm not saying your wrong Bryan, but I would imagine without validation, the price would drop considerably like that. Also, he was probably quoting the price the comic shop would pay for an uncertified prop as opposed to a price a collector would be willing to pay.

If you're still sure they're wrong, you should apply for the job. :)

Not me but there are some guys over at the Replica Prop Forum who are experts on ID'ing sabers and they jumped all over this one as a replica. Even saying 90% certainty that it's a from the set stunt is a HUGE claim with no basis.

To be honest, he went through all the detail that was correct on the prop....and then poor editing makes it look like he randomly blurts out "I don't think this is a lightsaber from A New Hope......however, I am about 90% certain that it is a lightsaber used in The Empire Strikes Back". There was no explanation about how he comes to this conclusion or why he thought it was ESB rather than ANH. It all seemed very contrived...

We'll see how the Star Wars expert fares next time he's called in.

Did watch the 1st episode on Sat. and hope to catch the 2nd one in the next couple of days. And i do see Kenny's point about them being a little mean. The guy with the beard was getting on my nerves with his antics with Ming. It probably was for show but I didn't care for that part. Glad that Ming won!

His name is Kevin Lyle and I actually friended him on FaceBook the other day and shared my thoughts about that saber. He was cool about it and in the small world department, he grew up in the town a few miles from me back in Connecticut and went to High School with some of my friends!

I watched the second episode and enjoyed it more than the first.  Several fun things in this one, including a guy that came by with his 1966 Batmobile replica - that was cool!  And he let the shop guys drive it too!  I would have been freaking out if it was my car.  And I saw the lightsaber portion.  It's obvious that it's the Luke saber version from Empire - it has the circuit board trigger (not a calculator bubble type trigger) and it had the tell tale rivets holding the grips on (another Empire clue).  But I saw no evidence or real reasons behind this being named an actual on set prop vs. a nice replica.  I'm voting it's just a nice replica.  Anyway, enjoying the show.

I'm enjoying this series.  It's settled into a fun format I like.  And I enjoy seeing what treasures people bring in to sell each week.  Definitely a show for us types who have haunted comic shops for a good part of our lives.
