Looks like PS3 owners in the UK will be able to download an app that will allow Netflix streaming sometime soon. Click for the full story:

Yep been looking forward to this for a while now. Don't have a ps3 so I'll be needing the XBMC or Windows Media Center app to be compatible with UK accounts. :)
Great news thanks for the heads up!
I've just ordered a Blu-ray thats connected to the internet so i'm hoping i'll be able to get it that way.

I very good chance unless they have made a deal with LoveFilm :(
So Netflix UK launched today with a 30 day free trial and priced at £5.99 per month for unlimited streaming.
LoveFilm responding by reducing there monthly unlimited streaming to £4.99! Now I'm not LoveFilm fan, they have less content than Netflix (and looking at the initial start up content in the UK thats saying something!) and all the good stuff is extra on pay per view.
Well I've joined Netflix on the trial. Some good kids content which will be handy having 2 iPhones and and iPad in the house and it looks like it is now supported on all the major console platforms and I think the Apple TV. Looking at it though it does seem to be about 10% of choice compared to the US version like I predicted but I'm confident we will see this increase, especially since we have competition from LoveFilm over here.
As i dont currently own any consoles or an Apple TV I'm waiting for the XBMC add on to get updated to support UK accounts so I can watch it on my HTPCs using my remote and not having to drop into a web browser. I won't hold my breath that the official Windows Media Center addin will be updated as they haven't even bother to update it to work with Canadian accounts! :(
Are they offering a physical disc option too?
I've seen they have an iPhone app so perhaps I need to look into this.
LoveFilm on the XBox is my other streaming option but as I'm not an XBox Gold member (and don't intend to be) that adds up to in excess of £10 per month.

Nope, streaming only.
Kids love it so far but I'm waiting for the content to arrive :)

Pretty handy in my household with to iPhones and an iPad.
Yep Xbox live gold is a pain if you don't game. Just wAiting on the HTPC options (probably just going to be XBMC ) personally.

Is the selection really as poor as it appears to be at the moment (i.e. one screen of titles in each category) or am I missing something?

Is this on the iPad GUI? No you scroll along to see more titles but it isn't that extensive.
No. iPhone web interface.
Don't want to use up a free trial if there's nothing on there I want to watch!
Ah I dont think you can browse the entire catalogue without signing up Mike, that might be it.
I'll make a decision at the end of the trial on whether I'll keep this going. I have a few issues. I need to have a proper htpc plugin for it, browsing a website will not do. The other problem is the issues Silverlight has with hardware acceleration and Atom / ion2 pcs (which I use as my HTPCs) meaning HD just won't work for me.
I still can't see how you guys watch anything of length on a phone. The iPad seems small to me at times, but I'll watch a TV show on there. Movies almost always go on the big screen HDTV.

I use the iPhone Netflix app when I'm traveling. In fact, coming home from my grandma's house I watched a couple episodes of Death Note on my iPhone via 3G on the road. It is very watchable. I really use the iPhone one when I have no Wifi because obviously my iPad or PC can handle Netflix just fine.

x2, that's why I knew the iPad would be a winner. Netflix will not be doing physical discs in any international market going forward.

before I got my iPad I watched movies on my iPod touch all the time. This was before Netflix had an app, and I would convert and transfer DVDs or downloads on the ipod for the portability factor. I'd watch at lunch, on the train, in line at the bank, whatever. At home I'd never use it that way, and always either stream to the TV or watch on my laptop. Once I got the ipad though, all that changed and I haven't used the phone for video since. And I find the screen on the iPad satisfying enough that I'll watch on it at home just for the ability to walk around the house and go outside without interrupting my viewing. I almost prefer the iPad to the TV because it fits with my frequent inability to sit still for long periods of time.

I don't - that's what the video connection to the TV is for... (OK, perhaps when travelling occasionally, but not very often)
I don't very often. I have plenty of places to watch at home but I if don't have to do any work in converting and uploading content then I may be inclined to watch the odd show during quiet periods at work using Netflix ;)
Found out something interesting today.
When Netflix went "international" with Canada and Latin America their account system changed. Apparently you can log into your Netflix account from different countries (providing that country has Netflix) but you are restricted to the content from that country.
What this means is technically, using a VPN pointed to the United States, I could login in with my UK Netflix account and be "restricted" to US content! ;)
I haven't tried it yet and I am yet to find an example of a UK account holder doing this but plenty of Canadians are doing this so I'm inclined to think it will work for the UK.
That's awesome!!! It just shows again that using the internet can't really be constrained by borders.
