No, no insult taken.  Again, I just wanted to mention the above ideas you can try.  I'll be frank, for most people listening to any podcast is a somewhat passive experience.  What I try to offer is a way for people to send in comments ahead by announcing my schedule usually weeks in advance.  Most podcasts never do that.  I think generally people either forget to send in comments or just don't have the time.  It does take some effort on the part of the community.  And most of the time I am quite happy with the support and comments I get.  I think summer time is a bit hard as most people are not in their "normal" routine and the comments tend to dwindle a bit.  That's fine.  Plus it depends on the subject.  I had just thought with the recent "Quantum Leap" thread and discussion that more people would have sent something in for the show today.

Indeed. I like sending in comments whenever I can. I never really watched Quantum Leap much so it's hard to comment on it as a series. The advantage of Rico doing Trek episodes is I've seen them all and he generally puts them in the "theater" a few days before the show so I can put it on during the day while I work for a refresher.

And I fully agree summer is hard. I had out of towners in yesterday and a different set of them visiting today!

I agree with Rico though you are a lot more organised than i am. Mike is becoming a regular contributor to my podcast and I'm fully aware how much time it does take to record a comment or even do a email on a subject because you like to add somehing new or different. It is also a 50/50 thing because if you do a show about a subject someone doesn't know much about then they wont send in a comment eg i don't know much about Quantum Leap (actually i just cant remember) so i cant offer an opinion.
It does make you feel pretty darn good though when someone does send in a comment or email, and i do enjoy making people feel part of the show. My problem is that we are starting to record several months worth of shows in one go (so i don't have to worry about recording when the baby is here) so i have to ask people hey if you like any of these shows please tell me about it and then I'll add it in.

@ Rico
Well, it's not that important and probably works in theory.

The only example of comments being proceeded by a board discussion I know about is the latest ST movie. Considering it's a movie no one had seen it worked quite well, but that was extraordinary and can't always happen.

IF I BORE YOU; YOU WON'T MISS ANYTHING IF YOU STOP READING RIGHT HERE!

I still think I didn't get the point across, let me elaborate:

The present day procedure works like this:

You post the topic, everyone reads it and some will compile a comment and send it only to you, not knowing what others did.

The procedure I'd suggest:
Post the new topics in single threads that later become the podcast thread for further discussion after listening. If you already have an outline, some bullet points would be even better (compare RPG, everyone knows where it's going, right?)
And now there's a place for a bit of discussion.

The possible benefits:
* people might rediscover their interest in the topic
* you might be able to get a hint what are the most burning questions
* knowing what others think would allow
   - to team up in pro/contra opinion
   - to refer to others opinion
   - to discover a unique own opinion that should be voiced
   - the many specialist in this forum to concentrate on their field of interest
   - to cover topics you don't intend to for various reasons

I think this are some interesting possibilities that would enrich the podcast, and considering how the RPG works I think some of my assumption aren't that far from what's happening there.

Contra points:
* You might not like to do your podcast that way. A legit point as there will be no podcast if you don't have fun making it! :)
* It's too much effort and not worth the outcome.
* The comments are different in a bad way.
* It might not work.

Please, I'm not saying the present comments are bad, I like them, but I think it could be even better. I also don't think there aren't enough comments, variations in quantity are quite normal for many reasons.

And as a reminder, social scientist here, I entertain myself making theories. I also like strategic approaches in games, there are often different approaches that all work very well. So please don't take this for something it's not. :)

Rico

While I appreciate your thoughtful comments, things will stay the way they are for now.

Rico

A little reminder - if anyone has time I could still use some more audio comments for the podcast for tomorrow on "Little Green Men" from DS9.  Or even a book, movie or TV show review.  Those are always nice to have too!

Looking for comments on the "Back to the Future" trilogy of movies for this coming weekend's podcast.

Bummer -  need to check the schedule more often.   One of my top ten trilogies.

I loved the first one, but never cared for 2 and 3. The first was just about perfect.

Cool Stuff Rico, really looking forward to this podcast. Unfortunately things are Topsy turvey for me right now so could not do a comment.

sheldor
