Rumor: CBS Moving Forward With Star Trek: TNG In HD Project? May 9, 2011
by Anthony Pascale

The remastering of Star Trek: The Next Generation in HD is something that has been talked about ever since CBS gave the original Star Trek series the HD treatment in 2006. Now a new rumor has surfaced that CBS is moving forward on the project. Details below.

Rumor: TNG in HD project moving forward?

The latest news of Star Trek: The Next Generation in HD comes from our friend Bill Hunt at Digital Bits, who has a "Rumor Mill" post which cites sources "hinting that TNG Remastered IS moving forward." According to the report this remastered TNG would first show on Netflix in the fall (in addition to their TNG SD offering) and possibly on EPIX as well. TrekMovie recently reported that Netflix had confirmed that all seven seasons of TNG will begin streaming in July in standard definition, with only the Star Trek original series and Enterprise available in HD.

Digital Bits report also states:

We believe a high-definition film scan of The Next Generation is very likely in the cards for the entire series run, along with the requisite digitally-upgraded effects. Of course, in addition to syndication and streaming, the end result of all this might be a Next Generation: Remastered Blu-ray release down the line.

TrekMovie has not yet been able to confirm this report, however we have previously reported that CBS has been considering a remastered TNG project for years. We first reported on this from Comic Con 2007 when CBS revealed they had done tests on an "upresed" version of TNG. And last Summer CBS's VP of Consumer Products John Van Citters told TrekMovie confirmed that there were still conversations going on at CBS about TNG-R, but he noted that, at the time, there was no specific plan or budget for the project. It is worth noting that it took CBS two years to remaster all three seasons of original Star Trek, so if a project has started using similar techniques, it is hard to imagine it could deliver all seven seasons of TNG in HD by the fall of this year.

Last summer Van Citter stated that there were significant technical issues that made remastering TNG in HD more problematic than remastering the original Star Trek series. One of the main issues is that the special effects for TNG were done in video, and redoing all the effects would be much more expensive than with the TOS Remastered project. Mike Okuda, who was one of the producers for 2006-2008 project to remastered the original Star Trek series, once told TrekMovie a particularly problematic issue is with the USS Enterprise D bridge screen. Unlike the original series, characters often stood or walked in front of the screen and so to swap out new digital effects, they would have to manually rotoscope out all the moving actors. However, last summer CBS' Van Citers also noted that he was "optimistic" CBS would eventually figure out how to deliver Star Trek: The Next Generation in HD.

Shot from  pilot "Encounter at Farpoint" shows how live action and effects shots are more often intertwined in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" – making it harder to remaster in HD

If the DigitalBits rumor is true, then it could be that CBS has resolved the technical (and financial) issues for TNG-R. TrekMovie asked CBS to respond to this report, but we were told  they have no comment on rumors. We are also awaiting a response from Netflix, but a source at EPIX cast doubt on their being involved as they currently don't have a deal with CBS and only show movies (not TV shows).

TrekMovie will keep an eye on this potentially very exciting project.

TNG on HD Blu Ray would be so sweet. All my fingers and all my toes crossed. Now we just need a netflix uk to open and we will be able to add things, like all the podcasts seem to.

Looks like this will probably be happening.  Reports out of Comic Con indicate CBS is doing a test set of episodes for a possible Blu-Ray release for TNG for 2012.  Woo-hoo!

Damn you Paramount! BluRay collections are expensive! I'm all over this, the TOS episodes look so great in HD. I know that TNG will be much more challenging to do, will be interesting to see how it turns out, new effects and all.

It pretty close to official, but it seems we have the names of the first four episodes coming out on hidef. Blu-Ray for TNG.  I wish two of them were "The Best of Both Worlds", but these will do fine.  I'm sure we will get them all at some point.

The Digital Bits site reported back in July that sources at Comic Con had confirmed CBS were working on a high-definition transfer for The Next Generation and that 4 'test episodes' were being worked on with the aim of releasing a 'sampler blu ray' sometime in 2011.

On September 2, LeVar Burton, TNG's Lt. Cmdr. Geordi La Forge, tweeted that he had stopped by CBS Paramount Television City to 'see how the TNG conversion to HD for Blue Ray was coming along...' and followed up his tweet with the hashtag #mindblown.

Now, the Digital Bits has confirmed through sources at CBS Paramount which episodes will be featured on the blu-ray sampler disc:
'The disc will include FOUR episodes, two of which will include Encounter at Farpoint, Parts 1 and 2. We're told that the other two should be The Inner Light and Sins of the Father...'

Well if there's any episode that needs some effects work, it's be Farpoint!

Can they fix Troi's acting too? Pain...PAIN!!

I'd rather listen to Troi saying "Pain...PAIN!!" on a loop, for 45 minutes, than ever have to watch the 'Casino Royale' episode ever again.

I suppose Farpoint is logical but it's nowhere near a favourite. Do you think they'll fix the 'chainmail fence in space' to look a little less '18th century'?

I can't wait to see this. I know they will treat them with respect if the treatment of the TOS remasters is the measure. It will be interesting to see if they can get season 1 looking sharp and detailed as it suffers from poor quality compared to later seasons.

Okay, makes sense, but what was the problem with the shooting that they had once said would cause problems when trying to turn to HD? I can't remember the specifics, but I do remember that there was supposed to be some sort of issue.

As has been discussed a bit here, it's the effects.  Basically the live action was shot on film.  Much of the effects work was only composited on video.  So, the end result (as I understand it) is the effects will have to be redone.

As I understand it, the 35mm film can be upconverted no problem but the effects are native in 480i which would upconvert very badly, hence they have to redo the effects shots.

There is no "upconverting" for the 35mm film portion.  Film quality, even 35mm is of a higher resolution than Blu-Ray.

Cool video. I wouldn't be able to buy all these on blu-ray when the start releasing them so i thought it would be cool if they put them back on tv buuuuut, I'm dropping cable down to basic because it cost to blasted much. So I will no longer have any HD tv. I'll still have my PS3 though for blu-ray disc.

From the press release:

"CBS is, in fact, returning to the original film negatives, a mother lode of material encompassing 25,000-plus reels of footage, and editing the episodes together precisely as they were when they originally aired between 1987 and 1994. Visual effects will not be upconverted from videotape, but instead will be recompositioned. The freshly cut film will ultimately be transferred to high definition with 7.1 DTS Master Audio. And all of the work is being done in conjunction with respected, longtime Star Trek figures Denise and Michael Okuda, who are on board as consultants."

I wonder if these are going to be 16x9 or 4x3? I imagine they can get that from the film.

Very unlikely to be 16:9 or any wide screen format.  It might be possible, but the episodes were not shot with that in mind.  This is going to be quite the project.  I would guess we may see them do a season at a time and release them that way.  Bring it on I say!

Yeah, I suppose there would be stuff on the sides, didn't think of that. Rather have them in HD in 4x3 than cropped like B5 did on the DVDs.

Supposedly season 1 will be out sometime near Fall 2012 for the 25th anniversary. 25th!!! Hard to believe it's been that long.

They should have the 4:3 "clean" versions and a 16:9 version where you see the director, lighting, sound guy and actors subbing out their cigarettes before they walk into scene :)

If they have the complete negative, they could choose which way they want to display it, but I don't think that they'd choose letterbox because it would be change too much.

My point exactly.  Shots are framed in a certain way for the format dimensions.  Remember, widescreen TV is a pretty recent change.  I believe only Enterprise was shot with widescreen in mind.

That depends what you mean by, "remastered."  The effects shots for TNG were put together in a video format.  So, they have to take those original shots and redo them in hidef.  That can mean a few things.  Models shots of ships and things can be recreated in hidef. if the footage is still around.  Other things will probably have to be newly created via modern CGI (weapons fire, explosions, etc.) when they create the new effects.  This is all different than when they enhanced TOS.  Those effects shots were all brand new, CGI shots.  We will get a good idea of how all this will look with this sampler Blu-Ray set they are doing.

From Trekmovie.com :Aspect ratio for Blu-ray release is the original aspect ratio as it aired on televsion – 1.33:1 (4:3) - confirmed by TrekMovie.com and The Digital Bits

Also the shot of the Enterprise at the end is an example of the recomposited effect shots. It looks great, love that all that model work is going to stay.

Keep in mind those comparison pics are just from the video trailer released (which has already been compressed for online viewing).  But even with that, the added detail is pretty nice.

From Trekmovie:

Two weeks ago we reported on new details for the Star Trek: The Next Generation – Remastered project. As was rumored, today CBS has made details of the project official. All 178 episodes will be re-scanned from the original films elements and visual effects elements will be re-composited into a 1080p workflow for mastering onto Blu-ray and runs on syndicated television and digital distribution (i.e. Netflix) both domestically and internationally.

The long rumored effort to remaster Star Trek The Next Generation is confirmed! Just in time for the 25th anniversary in 2012. CBS has once again shown its commitment to the Star Trek franchise by remastering it in HD. Each of the 178 episodes from The Next Generation's seven seasons will be transferred to high-definition 1080p for release in the Blu-ray format and, eventually, for runs on television and digital platforms in the U.S. and across the world.

The remastering process

CBS is starting from scratch using the original film negatives, and editing the episodes together precisely as they were when they originally aired between 1987 and 1994.
Visual effects will not be upconverted from videotape, but instead will be recompositioned from the film elements available.
The freshly cut film will be transferred to high definition with 7.1 DTS Master Audio.
Work is being done in conjunction with Denise and Michael Okuda, who are on board as consultants.
Aspect ratio for Blu-ray release is the original aspect ratio as it aired on televsion – 1.33:1 (4:3) - confirmed by TrekMovie.com and The Digital Bits

Star Trek: The Next Generation - 'The Next Level' Blu-ray Disc Release Will Have a 13-Second Hitch, the Studio Says

An EXTREMELY short passage in 'Sins of the Father' won't be true high-def
Posted by David Lambert
   11/07/2011

At the end of September, CBS DVD and Paramount Home Entertainment officially announced their January 31st release of Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Next Level on high-def Blu-ray Disc. This single-disc, 182-minute release includes three classic episodes: the double-length pilot "Encounter at Farpoint", the Klingon-centric episode "Sins of the Father", and the epic Picard-oriented story "The Inner Light". The announcement for this title explained how much work the studio has been putting into making it a true high-def experience:

CBS is...returning to the original film negatives, a mother lode of material encompassing 25,000-plus reels of footage, and editing the episodes together precisely as they were when they originally aired between 1987 and 1994. Visual effects will not be upconverted from videotape, but instead will be recompositioned. The freshly cut film will ultimately be transferred to high definition with 7.1 DTS Master Audio.

That's great, but now it appears that a VERY minor hitch has come up with one of these three installments. In a document sent to retailers today, CBS/Paramount included the following notice about 13 seconds (i.e., a VERY short amount of time!) from one of these episodes:

"Sins of the Father" - 13 seconds of the original film elements for this episode have not been located and thus have been upconverted from Standard Definition videotape.

That's all the information included, and on the face of it you might be a tad alarmed. But as a super-intense fan of this show myself, you know what? Speaking for myself, it's all right. This is actually pretty minor, if you ask my opinion. I'm not going to get upset over 13 seconds, y'know? If you want to get upset over that, well, that's your prerogative of course, and I understand. I suppose I'm more concerned, however, over whether this issue may possibly crop up again with other episodes as the rest of the seven seasons gets upgraded to high-def. Will that happen? Only time will tell, of course. Stay tuned, and if we learn of anything further about this, then we'll certainly let you know! In the meantime, kudos to CBS/Paramount for owning up to this, and letting it be known in advance. It's certainly not going to affect MY plans to purchase these!

I don't think 13 seconds will stop me from buying this test set but I am a little concerned that this might be a common problem. I guess we'll see how the upconvert looks and go from there.

Frankly I'm amazed that's all they're missing from a show that's over 20 years old. I imagine that this might be an issue with the earlier seasons.

I admire them being upfront about it.  A tiny, upcoverted segment is something no one probably would ever have noticed.  I'm sure this will happen in places in other episodes as well.  But, 99.9% is of the original film footage is plenty ok with me!  :)

I sure wish we were getting more than three episodes on this release. I have to say though that the images streamed are better quality than the crappy DVDs we have. I will be replacing them for sure if and when they release the season sets. I think all will depend on the feedback they get from purchases of this little set.

Bah I love my DVDs, the special features and bonus discs from the original sets.  All seven seasons occupy the highest point of honor, on the top shelf of my DVD collction next to the extended LOTR trilogy and the first DVD release of the original Star Wars trilogy.  I don't anticipate replacing them ever, I spent too much money on that set and they mean too much to me...something like $130 bucks per set when they came out if I recall correctly, although the hours of enjoyment I got out of them is hard to put a value to.  I don't need HD, new effects, remastering, remodeling, or anything at all, what I have is pretty much just exactly perfect.

Kevin,

This was a test set of episodes for CBS to run through the remastering process and see how much work this would all take.  They have already announced they are going ahead with the entire series in season sets, so all the episodes are getting done.

A little more news about the remastering of TNG

First, Drexler shared the news that he will be working with Dan Curry, Mike and Denise Okuda and David Takemura on Star Trek: The Next Generation Remastered. "You heard right," said Drexler, "this time around Paramount is bringing in a team that lived TNG as it happened. Dan, as I'm sure you know, was the visual effects supervisor on Next Gen. Unlike the remastering of TOS, this job will be 100% true to the original. Visual effects shots will not be reinvented, pulling you out of the show. What's about to happen is truly extraordinary.

"The studio has saved all the original footage, and VFX elements from the good old days. We will be recompositing them, and then outputting them in high definition. Here and there, elements have been lost, and we will recreate only those missing pieces,  and with this promise: aside from looking like you had your windshield cleaned, you won't know the difference. Star Trek: The Next Generation is Gene Roddenberry's legacy, it is culturally significant, and we will rejuvenate the show with curatorial eyes only. Paramount Picture deserves a round of applause, and I can't wait to dig in with my friends."

I decided to pass on the sampler as I intened on upgrading my set to Blu-Ray when it's released. I saw no reason to spend $15.00 just to temporarily satisfy my curiosity. The Original series was so well done that I'm sure the same care will be given to TNG. I do like the screen shots I have seen thus far though.

Looks like season one will be coming maybe in the fall.  CBS plans to do two seasons a year or so for TNG.  Read on...

All seven seasons of TNG on Blu-ray by 2015 – other Trek series in consideration

In an interview with the official StarTrek site, CBS Home Entertainment General Manager Ken Ross talked about the TNG HD project. He said the release of the first season on Blu-ray is coming "late summer or early fall" of this year. He also promised it will include "a nice compliment of extras and some really cool stuff." Ross said the plan for rest of the series was to do "two seasons per year." If they keep with that schedule, the final set should be released in 2015.

Ross also talked about the scale of the entire project, saying:

It was and continues to be an enormous project that will take several years to complete. From a manpower perspective, we have more than 20 people working on this project full time in three shifts 24 hours a day. It's a huge commitment to transfer all seven seasons to high definition.

As for Enterprise, Voyager, and Deep Space Nine on Blu-ray, Ross said the focus was on TNG for now, but CBS will "certainly consider" bringing the other shows to HD.

As far as streaming, that will definitely be awhile.  Look how long it took Netflix to get Trek on DVD/streaming the first time.  Also, streaming won't look as good as a 1080p Blu-Ray disc.

I had to work real late yesterday so I didn't get a chance to watch my disc yet.  But I will later tonight!  :)

You will love it.

The crazy part is re- living the painful part of the characters trying to gain their footing.  They are all so different in their roles than they finally ended up being.  I'm talking encounter at far point.  I got a kick out of the paper read out comments, the over acting on Denise Crosby's character, the almost Zombie and odd behavior of dr. Crusher and of course the ultra emotional cosmic cheerleader Deanna Troi.  Warfs make up is pretty bad in HD on the first show, but ends up looking quite good on the others.

What a great series, so worthy of HD!

Streaming preferably.  Although I agree with Rico, it won't be as good as 1080p, but 720p looks a sight better than 480/w/e the current really bad format is on Netflix.

Whoa...the few seconds of footage they had to upconvert in "Sins of the Father" becuae the original film couldn't be found...the difference is startling. Just when I had gotten to take the HD conversion for granted. It's the part when Crusher comes to the bridge telling Riker someone else survived Khitomer.

Finally got a chance to enjoy this tonight and the quality is very nice, very HD.  The 4:3 aspect is a bit weird when I'm used to blu-ray being in 16:9.  But despite that, the Enterprise D looks really crisp and the rest of it just excellent.  They really did a good job of putting it into HD and...it looks really good.  That's all there is to say about it :).  One day I'll probably invest into all the blu-ray packs.  But it won't be quickly.  My main hope is that these eventually become available on Netflix and so forth.  Obviously that'll probably be several years from now.

Thanks again Bryan for the disc :D.

Apr 11, 2012: Missing footage from 'Sins of the Father' found?
Reports have surfaced that the missing 13 seconds of original film elements from Season 3's "Sins of the Father" has now been located. We originally reported on the missing footage back in November when the remastering team were forced to use upconverted SD material to fill the void in the episode which was featured on January's "Next Level" sampler release.

Answering a question on his Facebook page, Robert Meyer Burnett (responsible for creating documentaries on the 1st Season TNG Blu Ray set) has stated that the remastering team have now tracked down the missing elements which will be edited back into the episode for the release of the Season 3 Blu-Ray boxset. According to Burnett,

"It was indeed found and replaced. For the season three box set, SINS will be intact. We deal with this in a documentary for Season One."

This is indeed excellent news - we remain hopeful that any further missing elements will have a minimal impact on this project. We have been unable to validate Burnett's statements with CBS, but it would seem as though they are credible given the source.

We also have word that CBS are starting to prepare for pre-release publicity for the first season, so expect official news to start emerging soon!

This is good news and very encouraging. It means, at least to me, that they are doing as thorough a job as time and budget will allow and that they want to put out the best product they can. Thanks for the info.

Looks like some of the effects shots and models on TNG are being replaced with CGI contrary to what we've been told. I don't have a problem with this, looks like they are improving shots logically and not adding unecessary elements like CGI rocks ;)

This doesn't surprise me.  I was also wondering when I watched the copy I was given if it was CGI or not, the Enterprise looked too good for a model...Too crisp and such.

When did they say they weren't using any CGI?  I always thought they would have to use CGI.  Since CGI is nearly model-like these days I think it's fine - especially if it gets the effects up to HD quality.

The press release doesn't mention CGI at all so the don't say the wouldn't be using it I suppose. It talks about recompositing the original effect elements:

QuoteThe visual effects were all shot on film and will be painstakingly recompositioned, not upconverted from videotape.

I suppose I was under the impression no CGI would be used from that statement unlike with TOS. As I said, I've got no problem with it, especially with how well the CGI in TOS:R came out. :)

Be careful with press release info - on just about anything.  Things can easily change once they get into a project.  I don't think they really understood the undertaking until people were starting to really work on it.

I am not completely committed to upgrading. I would like to have the better quality but I just am not sure I'm willing to plunk down another $700 for a show I already own twice now (VHS and and DVD). I've got a few months to think about it. I haven't even watched completely through my TOS blu-rays. Hmmmmm....

It won't be $700.  I won't even pay $100 per season for this.  More like in the $50-70ish range to start, with discounts coming very soon after I'm sure.  But I know how you feel.  I felt the same a bit with TOS that I bought in multiple formats.  Just the way things seem to go with media.

I don't like being a negative nancy, but the special features on this seem pretty pathetic.  They were awesome with the DVD sets, especially how they offered bonus disks with more special features in each season set for early purchasers.  They would have to do alot more for me to buy these episodes again, especially since I'm paying a monthly fee to Netflix which allows me to stream every episode of every series on demand.  I'd like episode commentaries with the Okudas, Roddenberry's son, the actors, writers...come on now, there's plenty of people that would have probably jumped at the chance to make a little money for doing that.  Widescreen HD and some upgraded effects are pretty nice but I want more than just that.

Check this news out!  TNG on the big screen!!

As previously reported the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation arrives on Blu-ray on July 24th. And in order to promote the release, CBS will be holding theatrical screenings across the USA in advance of the release. These one-day screening events are another great way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the series.
The two first season episodes chosen for the event are  "Where No One Has Gone Before" and "Datalore." The screenings will also show behind the scenes on the making of the remastered TNG (from the Blu-ray special features). Screenings will be held across the USA.
See below for more details...

No specific theaters mentioned yet, but we will know soon.  Very cool!

A workmate of mine lent me his copy of the TNG sampler today, and earlier this evening I watched 'Sins of the Father.'  I must say it was spectacular than I ever imagined it would be, everything seem to leap of the screen!

I will purchase the show again on Blu-ray...but not as it comes out!  I have recently reached season 6 again, and will wait a while after I eventually finished season 7.  :)

Just watched Farpoint and see that apart from converting it to HD,  the studio has got rid of that rather bad edit as Riker and Data walk behind the hedge on the hollow deck, and digital erased some obvious strings towards the end of the story, amongst other fantastic work!  I am so tempted to by the show again!!

Sorry to see that Troi's performance hasn't been digitally enhanced!   ;)

I'm pretty sure it's just the "new" versions that will be on the Blu-Rays.  Keep in mind that these are not really being "enhanced" like they did with TOS.  For the most part they will be the same episode - just at 1080 res.

I think this quote in the article is important:

QuoteThe future of Star Trek in HD very much lays in the hands of us – the fans. CBS have been very clear that they will be guided by our appetite for this remastering. They will be observing early sales figures very closely, and their observations will have a large influence on the viability of not only the future of TNG-Remastered, but also Deep Space Nine and Voyager. They have invested an incredible amount of money and – indeed – faith in Star Trek TNG Remastered. It's now over to us to show them that we appreciate it, we love it and we want more of it!

Looks like there is an audio issue with at least 7 episodes in this set. I've seen it confirmed by several sources now. Seems to be in the DTS 7.1 mix, the centre audio channel has bled into the front channels or something. Looks like it is a mastering problem and not a production one as the pilot is one of the episodes affected but the preview disc didn't have the problem.

Anybody with high end Home Theatre amps might want to hold off for a reissue (if they ever bother doing one).

It's really kind of annoying that after all this time (almost a year since the announcement) that they could have let something like this kind of screw up occur. I'm seriously considering not opening mine and contacting Amazon for a return. I don't know how CBS can fix this big of an issue without replacing the whole set.

Australian sets have been recalled due to the sound issues and freezing on certain episodes. CBS have issued a statement saying they will be sending out replacements for discs 1, 3 and 4 free of charge elsewhere.

This means for me at least I will be holding off for the complete sets made good.

Official CBS statement on replacement discs:

Official CBS Statement

Dear Star Trek Fans,

We have discovered an anomaly in the English 7.1 DTS Master Audio track in our Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1 Blu-ray Box set. There are some episodes that inadvertently had their front channel designations incorrectly mapped, resulting in an undesired playback experience when listening to them in a 7.1 or 5.1 Surround Sound environment.

We are quickly working to remedy the situation. Replacement discs (Disc 1, 3 and 4) will be made available free of charge. Please email phe.stng@bydeluxe.com for details regarding the replacement program. You may also call 877-DELUXE6 (877-335-8936) between 8am to 6pm Pacific, Monday-Friday.

We strive to provide our fans the best Blu-ray experience possible and sincerely apologize for this inconvenience.

Really a bad way to start this Blu-Ray series off.  I'm going to look into this.  If I have to bother sending them the bad discs I'm just going to return my set to Amazon for a full refund.

I'm wondering if they'll recall these sets globally. Otherwise you're only choice will be to buy the existing set and request the replacement discs...

Really a bad way to start this Blu-Ray series off.  I'm going to look into this.  If I have to bother sending them the bad discs I'm just going to return my set to Amazon for a full refund.

You don't have to send the discs back but Sony does want the code on the first disc. It begins with SL and is really hard to see. I could not read the whole code with the naked eye. I had to borrow a magnifying glass to read it and even then the disc had to be held just right to get the light to reflect in such a way to be able to see the numbers. Anyway, if you do the call thing be sure you have that code because they will ask for it. Replacements will be mailed after the 10th of August. Pretty good response time considering.

Yep.  This is the email I received back from them:

To receive replacement discs 1, 3 and 4  for Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1 Blu-ray, please Reply to this email and provide the following information:

Your Name

Your Address

Your City, Your State  Your Zip

Your Phone Number

The entire Inner ID number, located on the back of disc 1, 3 or 4 on the inner hub.  It should begin with the letters SL

Replacement discs will be available beginning August 10th.  We will ship out within 5 days of this date.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

So, I think I'll keep my set for now and get the replacements.  This way I'll still have the future collectible of the "bad audio" disc versions too.  LOL!

well if anyone replaces the discs and doesn't want them, I would be up for paying the shipping on them to get to my house!  I don't care about the sound problem, and would love to see them in HD.

To clear be the audio issue only affects the 7.1 HD mix of the audio right? I wonder if the DTS core (ie the audio used with a regular DTS 5.1 system) is unaffected? Obviously if you're playing them in a stereo mix down you have no issues.

I think 7.1 systems are still pretty niche so I doubt there are a huge number of people affected by this.

The freezing issues are probably firmware related and should be resolved on most payers by updating the firmware. There is an audio sync problem apparently on the special features only but it seems that it has more to do with Blu-Ray settings than it does with an actual problem with the disc themselves. At least that's what Digital Bits reported.

Oh...I also meant to report that I called the number and was on hold for less than five minutes and it took maybe another five to give my info. All they do is ask for the SL number and if that is confirmed they get your name, address, telephone number and email. She said discs will be shipped out after the 10th of August and no return of the old discs.

UK disc replacement program info:

Update: Aug 8, 2012: UK Disk Replacement Service
Paramount Home Entertainment (UK) have confirmed details for a blu-ray disk replacement service for those fans who purchased the set in the UK. The full details are included below:

We have discovered an anomaly in the English 7.1 DTS Master Audio track in our Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1 Blu-ray Box set. There are some episodes that inadvertently had their front channel designations incorrectly mapped, resulting in an undesired playback experience when listening to them in a 7.1 or 5.1 Surround Sound environment. In addition, we have taken this opportunity to correct a few minor issues that were found on other episodes.

We are quickly working to remedy the situation by recalling affected product and replacing it. Corrected versions can be identified by the appearance of a red Delta on the spine and will contain barcode no: 5051368241838 for ease of identification. If you purchased the box set prior to the recall, this will be replaced and will be made available free of charge. Please email stng@sonydadc.com for details regarding the replacement program. You may also call 01992 657 739 Monday-Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

We strive to provide our fans the best Blu-ray experience possible and sincerely apologise for this inconvenience.

If you mean for season one only - yeah, sure.  Basically once they found the problem all new discs are being made with the new audio mixing.  Wait a month or two if you want to be sure before buying the set.

My replacement discs arrived yesterday. If anyone would like to have the four original discs I would be glad to mail them to you. It would be an inexpensive way for you to see if you want to invest in your own copy. They replaced discs 1, 3,4, & 5. In all honesty I couldn't really hear that much of a problem with the original discs. I'd be interested to know if anyone here has heard the audio issues and where they are located.

Season Two coming on December 4th!  Details below:

CBS have today announced an official release date for the sophomore season of Star Trek: The Next Generation on blu-ray. The 5-disc set is due for release on December 4 in the U.S. and Canadian markets. Furthermore, an initial outline of bonus features has also been published to give fans an idea of what's to come on the set:

Episodic Promos
Gag Reel
Audio Commentary on "Q Who" with Dan Curry, Rob Bowman and Mike Okuda
Audio Commentary on "The Measure of a Man" with Melinda Snodgrass, Robert Scheerer and Mike Okuda
Featurette: Reunification: 25 Years After The Next Generation (HD)
The Measure of a Man (HD Extended Version)
Featurette: Making It So: Continuing The Next Generation (HD)
All SD features originally included on the DVD release
CBS should be releasing a more detailed breakdown of these features in due course. Be prepared for some amazing surprises in the Season 2 set... whilst we can't publish any of the details just yet, I assure you that the TNG-R Season 2 Blu-Rays could quite easily go down in Trek history as the BEST Star Trek home entertainment release ever produced. Watch this space!

Finally - a quick note on our interview with CBS Digital. I spoke to the multi-talented crew headed up by Craig Weiss last Friday. I was able to put many of your questions to Craig and the team, and will be publishing the interview in full starting next week. Thanks to everyone for all their emails and questions!

Only two audio commentaries?  Such a shame.  I hate to be negative, I really do, but I expected more from these sets.  The features were so rich and detailed on the DVD releases and I was so excited each time a new season released.  For some reason I just don't feel the same here.  Maybe it's just because they're all already on my shelf and also readily available at the click of a button on Netflix, Amazon, etc.

More?!?  It's taken a lot of work to just get them all put back together in hidef for Blu-Ray from the various film elements.  Plus we are getting new effects, new features, new commentaries, extended episodes!!!  And trust me, once you watch a TNG in hidef on Blu-Ray you won't be pulling any DVD's off your shelf again.

You're probably right, and I should say I have not seen these in HD.  I guess I've been spoiled by all your full show commentaries, Rico.  Audio commentaries with people behind the scenes have long been my favorite features ever since DVD was first introduced, so yeah, I'd love to see more of these on these sets.

There is some awesome stuff on these sets but I've gotta say I'm a big fan of good audio commentary too. I don't expect them to have one for each episode but it would be nice to get them on a few key episodes from every season. I think they got it right with the 2 episodes they have picked for season 2.

What episodes would you like to see commentaries for in the upcoming seasons? Season 3 has to be "Yesterday's Enterprise" and "Best Of Both Worlds - part 1"

Hey - some cool news.  Looks like we get another shot to see TNG in theaters for the season two release.  I really enjoyed going to the season one theater event and I'm pretty sure I will go again to this one too.

After the huge success of the Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1 theatrical event earlier this year, Fathom Events and CBS will be teaming up once again for a special "celebration" of Season Two. In our interview with CBS executives Ryan Adams and David S. Grant earlier this month, Ryan was unable to reveal the exact episodes which would be featured as the event was still in the process of being finalized, however we're now fairly certain at this point that one of the episodes will be fan favorite "Q Who", the pivotal episode which first introduces us to the Borg.

Several theaters in the U.S. are now stating that the Season 2 special (entitled "Star Trek: The Next Generation - A Celebration of Season 2") will hit the big screen (in selected theaters) on Thursday, November 29 (for one night only). The Season 2 blu-ray set would then be released just a few days later on Tuesday, December 4.

We expect Fathom and CBS to issue a full press release soon about the event!

I'm a little more than halfway through the set, and actually have encountered a couple episodes I don't remember well or at all. I guess in my mind I totally wrote off the 1st season, but there's some great episodes in here! The video is amazing, but last night, I was more blown away by the quality and prominence of the score sin some episodes, especially "Datalore" and "11001001". Caught some nods to Alien in Datalore and I loved the revisiting of The Enterprise music from TMP when the Ent-D comes back to the Starbase at the end. Just lovely. Too bad they really made the scores more like aural wallpaper later on in the series.

You have to treat yourself as the blu-rays are...as you Americans say 'Awesome!!'  I had a day off work today, and  only having ordered seasons 1 & 2 last week season 2 came in the post this morning.   I watched Q Who this evening and it was lovely!

The only downside of the set is that Shades of Grey will show up more detail than ever before!!!   ;)

I nearly forgot to commit on how LITTLE space the boxset takes up!  I originally bought the first release of TNG on DVD in those big plastic boxes, and this new set will save alot of space!  :)

Maybe that's Picard right after they "Borg-ified" him?  I'm guessing to people that may not know this story perhaps they wanted to keep Picard more recognizable.

Yeah, if you remember the end of part 1, his flesh tone was pretty normal. It wasn't until part 2 where they added more gizmos and seeped all the color out of him in that scene where the single tear runs down.

What does 50.99 translate to in US dollars? Season 2 on Amazon is now super cheap at 61.99!

Here's the reason why the cover shows a more human Picard under his Borg gear.  It's because the packaging is going to be a slipcase and will show the normal Picard underneath.  And here's a low-def trailer for the BofBW Blu-Ray release.

Not sure I wanna spring the extra bucks just to have BOBW on one Blu-Ray disc (double dipping for two episodes combined). I can wait until season four is released. It will probably be out by September I  would imagine.

I believe there will be added features and footage on the single BofBW only disc.

I haven't watched many of the extras on the season 1 & 2 blu-rays yet, but this evening I watched the cast reunion feature on the season 2 disc, which worth the price of the set itself!  I had heard much of what they talked about over the years, but hearing it from their mouths gave it 'something else!'

A question for you all. are all the extras from the old DVD also on the Blu-rays?  If so I won't have to copy the extras from the DVDs before I sell them.  Thanks.

There are some different extras on each set I think.

Also, "The Best of Both Worlds" Blu-Ray coming out on April 30th just got reduced in price to $15.99 on Amazon!

i have seen the remasterd TOS, it is good, but it really looks too new, i know that is bad to say, but it is true, or at least to me it looks so new. if they can inprove the sfx fine, but if they do like they have done with TOS, just let them be.

Just in case there is anyone here who has not purchased seasons one and two of TNG Amazon.com has them on sale for only $52.49 each right now. I don't know how long the sale will last but this is probably the lowest you're going to find them.

I watched my Best of Both Worlds BluRay tonight, I was in a s*&t mood and it did the trick! There was a BOBW specific blooper reel and making-of doc. Liked the editing of the two episodes, right from "Mr. Worf, Fire" to the beam shooting out. No build up. I did miss the "dun dun DUN, dun dun DUN" music but oh well. We are lucky to be getting this stuff, I love it!

Cool!  That was what was shown in the theaters last week along with the background stuff too.

Looks like "Redemption" is getting the feature length treatment next! Amazon is taking preorders. I hope, hope, hope, they do this with "Time's Arrow". My personal favorite 2 parter.

Looks like the season 5 set that comes out this week is about $57. at Best Buy and $77 or so on Amazon.  So I just sent Amazon an email about this saying:

I noticed that Best Buy has this week the Star Trek Next Generation season 5 Blu-Ray set at $57.  That item on Amazon is about $20 more (here:  http://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Generation-Season-Blu-ray/dp/B00ENFS0F0/ref=pd_ys_sf_s_2644980011_a1_6_p?ie=UTF8&refRID=1YXH9Q2E7B6PCREX32WM (http://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Generation-Season-Blu-ray/dp/B00ENFS0F0/ref=pd_ys_sf_s_2644980011_a1_6_p?ie=UTF8&refRID=1YXH9Q2E7B6PCREX32WM)).
Will you be matching that Best Buy price in your system soon?  I prefer to order it via Amazon.

Rick Dostie

Let's see if they alter their price or just offer to price match to me alone.  :)

Glad you sent that Rico because I had pre-ordered mine from Amazon and it was too late to cancel. $57.99 is a fair price. I doubt the ENT set will get that low though.

Man with the price so low I might just have to pick these up again.  Seems crazy, since I have the DVDs and every episode of every series is still streaming on several services...but that's such a low price.  I paid close to $150 bucks for each season of the TNG DVDs, I think something like $137 on day one when they came out, except for season two which was marginally cheaper.

This bit of footage is from the upcoming season six set of TNG on Blu-Ray.  What's special about it is it gives us a feel for how DS9 could look in hidef.  Amazing!

I haven't got All Good Things yet so hopefully I'll get it for my birthday in April. And since I am not going to be getting the seasons on Blu-ray I wish they had released Time's Arrow, Descent, Gambit and maybe even Bitrhright on Blu-ray. I don't think I missed any two-parters?
