Title: iPad App Recommendations
Post by: spaltor on June 08, 2011, 09:59:31 AM
Okay, here it is - the thread for recommending iPad apps.  I've only had my iPad for a week at this point, without too much time to fiddle with apps, so I have nothing much to contribute at this point other than Netflix and Angry Birds.  BUT, let's all use this space to recommend some favorite apps or ask "is there an app that does x?"  So, friends - let's help each other unleash the potential of our iPads.   :ninja  hehe - ninja

I love Instagram on my iPhone. Not sure it's quite as compelling with the iPad but if you're out and about it's a really fun way to post and share photos.

Words With Friends HD (Or Reg for small iOSes) nice scrabble game I'm playing along with a bunch of other people on the board.
Infinity Blade: For the hardcore gamers.  Awesome graphics, currently playing, looking for some multiplayer action.
Dropbox.  (Or Box.net or other cloud services)
Official Twitter app works the best for the price of free.
Week Calendar HD improves and enhances on the base calendar provided by Apple, but if your happy with Apple's, then you won't need it :)
Skype App!
GoodReader is a good file management app as well as a great PDF reader.
iMovie/Garageband.  Depending on whether you like working with vids or music :).

I'll have more later.

Oooh, I have a question about the calendar.  I've noticed it synced with my Google account, which was great.  But I have 5 or 6 different calendars applied to my gCalendar, some of which I created, some of which I didn't.  But the iPad is only syncing with my personal calendar.  How do I get it to sync with all of the calendars applied to my gCalendar?

Did you click the "Calendars" button in the iPad's calendar app?  Its at the top left.  If that doesn't work, umm, let me look into it, it should be simple though.

x2 on Infinity Blade, cool game.
I love Star Walk as well, Zinio for magazines, HD Recorder for recording comment for podcasts, and we have a great auto racing game, just can't recall the name..

Btw, my Gamecenter name is the same as the name to the left: "KingIsaacLinksr" if you want to add me.  :)

A few more Apps: Instapaper and ReadItLater are good for reading articles in a better way at a later time.  I use both a lot.
AirVideo: For running your non-Apple videos without needing to take over your desktop. "Streamtome" may also work if you want Audio, though I have not personally used it.
iBooks, Dark Horse, Kindle, Marvel, DC, ComiXology for any reading that you may need to do.  :)  (There is also a Nook app)
There are a bunch of native google apps as well if you use their services, as well as even more Web-apps.
TuneIn Radio for all your radio needs.
Star Walk: For observing the stars and listening to Rick's Stargazer album :P

I think Rick Peete at one time had mentioned a good photoshop type program.  I need something to adjust size, crop, etc. images.  Suggestions?

Rico, Photogene is the app I use.  Very intuitive, good set of options.

As for other app recommendations, I have a bunch but I don't have the time right now to post them.  I will condense my blog posts into something manageable later tonight.

I haven't gotten around to actually doing this yet, but it's a great resource.  Thank you!

Now for another question - it's there a good (free or cheap) word processor?  Like an Open Office equivalent?  Or does it just make more sense to log into Google Docs on Safari?  And speaking of Safari, there's not another broswer available, is there?  ;)

I'll just list the ones I currently have installed, that I use regularly.  I'm not a big app guy, mostly because my iPad is used exclusively for movies, books, comics, and web surfing.  None of those things (except for comics which I already said I use Cloudreaders for) require any apps.

Most if not all of these are free.

USA Today - digital version of their newspaper

Slacker Radio - internet radio stations

Radio.com - more internet radio, includes some local stations, used to be called CBS radio

CNN - great news site, obviously

Netflix - this was probably the first app you downloaded if you subscribe

ABC Player - free access to a limited number of current ABC shows with some commercials

Crackle - free app with a selection of Sony produced movies and TV shows with commercial breaks inserted in

iBooks - IMO the best book reader for the iPad is the one that comes with your iPad

Cloudreaders - I've talked about this in other threads, the best free comic reader

HBO Go - if you subscribe to HBO, shows a TON of content.  Huge number of on demand movies, all their original series, extras, shorts for on demand viewing through wifi or 3G.  Has the ability to subscribe to complete seasons of shows and it reminds you when they become available for viewing.  Awesome app.

Xfinity TV - For Comcast subscribers, makes all the premium content available to stream instantly on your iPad.  Some bugs but generally works well.

Yelp - I rarely use it, especially wary of the social networking aspects of this app, but I've gotten some good local resturaunt recommendations.  Contains reviews and recommendations of businesses all over the world.

Epicurious - Great, free, huge database of recipes available.  Ingredient lists and recipe instructions integrate with notes, MMS, and email to assist with shopping and sharing.

Skype - You all know what this is.  I have no idea how good it is on iPad 2, havemt really used it much on my iPad since I have it on my iPhone

TED - neat video database of hundreds of speeches on a wide variety of topics.  Many are interesting and educational as well as entertaining.

Night Stand - Adds a basic, functional alarm clock and stopwatch with a variety of skins.  Dunno if iPad 2 has this, but amazingly, the original iPad did not ship with this functionality.

EGM Digital - very cool digital format for their video game magazine.  Content has been updated weekly so far, very neat interactive articles.

I've tried alot of games, but only a few have been keepers.  Infinity Blade, Need For Speed Hot Pursuit, Dead Space, Plants vs. Zombies, Civilization Revolution, Pinball HD get lots of play from me when I'm on the go.

There are many alternative browsers, but Safari has worked just fine for me.  Just search for browsers :).

There are very few if any OpenSource programs on iOS because they believe the DRM violates their policy.  (tbh, I think they are being too picky, but whatever). Pages works nicely, i used it to create four very long papers for this term. there are a few alternative programs that Rick P. uses.  Though I can't remember the names off hand.  QuickOffice I think is one oh and Office2HD, though I found that Office2HD is way too simple to use and buggy.

I'm really looking forward to the Safari update in ios 5, for the true tabbed page browsing feature.  I absolutely HATE how the pages refresh every time you switch currently.  This will really improve the functionality of mobile web browing with Safari IMO.

Yeah, that was the only reason I was looking for an alternative browser so now I'm just going to wait.  :)

Great suggestions Joby.  I'll check many of them out.

I'm looking for good magazine type content/suggestions too - beside apps.  Things that have tech content, entertainment news, etc.  I'll probably subscribe to that digital version of the "Star Trek" magazine soon too.  I wonder if Entertainment Weekly has a digital version for subscribers?  That would be awesome!

Check out the Zinio app.  It is a magazine reader that many magazines use rather than creating their own apps.  Star Trek is one of their many titles.  I use it a lot.

I use Perfect Web Browser.  It is an excellent alternative and supports the ability to report as other browsers (important when some sites check the UserAgent to determine compatibility and this can make a site work with the iPad)

Just started using Instacast on my iPhone. It's basically a way to manage all your podcasts without having to sync via iTunes. It also doesn't suffer from iTunes' caching issues. If you make a change to your feed, it's visible right away.

It allows you to download episodes, stream episodes, has options to only download shows automatically when it's in wifi, etc. I think this is going to be my new way to consume podcasts.

I used to have an app that supposedly worked like that over 3g,  but it took so long to load and would drop out, buffer etc., that I eventually deleted it.

Obviously over 3G you are entering a much bigger set of issues and connection troubles.  But I can tell you over wireless at home for me it's like having my desktop PC with me on my lap on the iPad screen.  Very sweet App!
Title: Re: iPad App Recommendations
Post by: RickPeete on June 10, 2011, 08:43:52 AM
I would suggest checking the app's Developer Website link in the App Store.  For that app to work over 3G, it would have to be able to go through your router's firewall.  My guess is that unless this product gave instructions on how to do this, the default behavior is not to work over 3G (or for that matter, an external WiFi connection).

Rico, can you access your desktop using this product from your work office or Starbucks or Panera?

I use a different product for remote access to my desktop and servers.  it will definitely work over 3G and external WiFi but I did have to make a few port security changes in my firewall to allow it.

It has an experimental feature that will look for your computer over the Internet as opposed to the local network but I'm not sure if that includes 3G.

Post by: Rico on June 10, 2011, 08:46:27 AM
I haven't had a chance to try it over "Wifi in the wild" yet.  I've heard it's possible, but again you need to configure some stuff on your home network and router I think.

Yeah you'd have to either know your public IP address (which can change) or use a service like DynDNS, then port forward to your machine. Of course then your computer is on the internet with open ports. :)

DiagnosticPADD - Park Bench Software LLC
iCARS Interface - Nick O'Neill
iScanner Tricorder - Adam McElhaney (more suited to iPhone/iPod)
STARSS - Christopher Kriens

Hey, I may have asked this before, but is there any type of file manager App for the iPad.  I do wish I could delete comics, videos, etc. right on the iPad in their respective apps rather than connecting the device to my PC, and deleting them via iTunes.

GoodReader is one of the best, if not THE best.  Its constantly being updated by the developers with new and free features so $4.99 is a great bargain.  I personally use it for the ease of use, its connection to Appigo's Todo and the built-in auto-sync features.
Zen Viewer has a greater emphasis on UI and visuals, but since it is new, it is fairly lacking and so far hasn't been updated since its initial release.  It does not have an auto-sync feature, (though it does connect to some cloud services).  Its PDF-reader is also very lacking in comparison, but GoodReader was built with some amazing PDF capabilities so its a bit unfair I suppose.
The other two you mentioned I have not used.

I'm pretty sure you can delete anything without connecting to itunes.  I know in Cloudreaders if you slide your finger across a title you'll get a delete option, just like deleting emails.  To delete a video hold your finger over the icon and you'll get an X in the top left corner.

Got this new App last night from Wacom called Bamboo paper.  Fun little drawing program.  Free app until the end of June.  Here's a 2 minute drawing I did - with my finger!

I heard about this app, I know Wacom is selling a stylus to go along with it, though I hear the reviews of the Boxwave stylus are better.

I just got the Boxwave stylus from Amazon and it's nice.  I didn't try it with this App yet, but I will.  I do like the Boxwave A LOT better than the Pogo style sold in the Apple stores (which I returned).

Hey, just wanted to let folks know that EA games seems to be having a big App sale right now.  Lots of stuff is now only $0.99.  I just bought Monopoly for my iPad.  Catch the deals while you can.

Yeah I bought Scrabble. The cool thing about this game is if you have an iPhone, you can download a free companion app that lets you use your phone as your letter tray. You flick your tiles from the phone on to the iPad.

I almost got Scrabble too.  Maybe I'll still grab it for that price.  I think these games were at $4.99 and up before this sale.

I downloaded a fun little game called Tiny Tower. you basically construct a building one floor at a time putting in apartments for people to live and various types of businesses for the people to work in. Very simple game that's pretty entertaining!

A few games to recommend:

Airport Mania: Time-management game that is fun and quirky, with you directing airplanes to the right place.  If you don't do it quite quickly enough, they become angry.  Its pretty laid back for a time-management game.  :)

Train Conductor 1 & 2: Another time-management game where you move trains to the right tracks on many levels.  I reviewed this game on my blog a while back.  One of my favorite games :).

Robotek HD: Chance-based strategy scifi game about you taking the world back from the take-over of the robots.  Pretty graphics and balanced gameplay.  Free-to-play, but you don't need to pay-to-win.  :)

Haven't had any app recommendations for a while so I'll throw out one:

Flipboard.  For iPad only.  Basically, if you want to read from a variety of sources such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or even your RSS reader, this app will put them all into a magazine-type format.  Very nifty and I use it from time to time to catch up on the day's news.  You can even add from other sources for Tech news and such.  Very touch friendly with all sorts of ways to open, close and flip between stories.  I really enjoy using it.  :)  Its free too.

I think it's been mentioned somewhere else but Skype released a native iPad version yesterday. The interface is much, much nicer for the iPad screen! It's free, but you have to go back to the app store and download the iPad version (it won't update to the native one, it's not universal) and then delete the iPhone version you may have already installed.

Yeah got it yesterday, much nicer looking. It's strangevthey just didn't update and make a universal app. I would think the basic functionality underneath the UI would be the same.

Yeah, I don't get it either, other free apps will do this and it makes little sense to me as to why...maybe it cuts down on the app's size?...

Besides just using the Netflix app itself (which seems to work ok for me), just open a browser and log into your Netflix account there.  Easy to manage your queue right at the source.  :)

The Netflix official app doesn't allow you to manage your DVD queue and when you load your queue page on an iOS device (iPhone or iPad) the page is very slow to respond.  That's why I've used one of the apps on my iPhone for years.  I was hoping there was a good iPad one but haven't come across any yet.

Not so much that it loads slow but once the page opens if I try to go up or down the page or tap on an item it takes 5-15 seconds for it to react.  This happens on all browsers that I've tried on my iPad.

Found a really cool App called Goodplayer.  It seems to be able to play just about any media type file on my iPad.  If you have your computer set up with some kind of server function (such as TVersity), you can stream files right off your computer too.  Or just move them to the iPad and then play them.  I've also tried it with several types of file formats and all seem to work great.  I've also AVPlayer HD too, but that one seems to require you to move the files to your iPad.  Anyway, give it a try.

Hey - does anyone know an App or maybe even some kind of email notification site/service that will let you know what apps are on sale in the App store?  I know you can just go to the store and check, but I want something more automatic so I don't miss any deals.

Here's a suggestion for Rick Moyer ---  Animoog.  A very cool Moog synth for the iPad, iPhone, etc.  Only 0.99 right now (normally $29.99!!!).  Maybe you already have this, but it seems perfect for you!

One of my friends here from the forum messaged me this morning and suggested it, then bought it for me!  SO COOL!  Can't wait to jump into it.

I'm doing a memorial today for a family, but when I'm done I'm going to mess around with the Moog app.  SO COOL!

Thanks guys!  And thanks my friend, you know who you are, for gifting me this app.

Just a quick FYI on the Dolphin HD browser...the security flaw described in the linked article is for the Android version, not sure if it carries over to the iPad browser.  I'm kind of glad I didn't use this for more than a day anyway, seems pretty shady to me.

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/2011/10/major-privacy-flaw-found-in-dolphin-hd-browser-for-android.ars (http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/2011/10/major-privacy-flaw-found-in-dolphin-hd-browser-for-android.ars)

Major privacy flaw found in Dolphin HD browser for Android
By Ryan Paul | Published 3 days ago
Dolphin HD has long been our favorite third-party Web browser for Android. Its excellent tabbed user interface, add-on system, and gesture support have made it a popular choice among Android enthusiasts. But recent versions of the browser have introduced a startling privacy flaw.

Discussions in the XDA forums and a report published on the Android Police blog yesterday revealed that every URL loaded in Dolphin HD is relayed as plain text to a remote server. The article includes screenshots from a packet sniffer that clearly demonstrate the issue—it's an unambiguous breach of privacy.

In response to the resulting controversy, the company behind Dolphin issued a statement explaining the situation. Recent versions of Dolphin introduced a feature called Webzine that offers a specialized presentation of websites. When a user visits a website, the URL is relayed to Dolphin's servers which determine whether the Webzine view is supported for the specified destination. The company contends that the data is not collected or retained. It subsequently issued an update to disable the feature and said that it will be made opt-in in future versions.

As a frequent user of Dolphin HD, I was disappointed by this privacy blunder. In addition to failing to inform users of this dubious practice up front, Dolphin's developers also made poor implementation decisions that exacerbated the privacy risk. It's fortunate that the Android enthusiast community detected this behavior.

Yeah, if you look at 99% of the games on the leaderboards, they are all cheating at #1-5.  Don't know how, but its probably a jailbreak or something.

That's why I only pay attention to the friend leaderboard, more fun anyway :)
