Title: New Members
Post by: Geekyfanboy on January 06, 2011, 08:32:35 AM
I was thinking that we haven't gotten any new members (and by that I mean new members who participate). It's kind of been the same family (core group of users) for a while now.. I think the last person to join our Treksf family was Al (Quadshot) and that's been a while.  Also I noticed that the ladies have been absent as of late.. this seems to be a boy club now (which suits me fine  :lol2 ) Anyways just an observation.

Some have come and some have gone.

There seems to be a higher turnover of new members than there is of new participationg members but that group does turn over too as witnessed by your observation that all the girls have left... (sorry, I mean thay've 'become a little more irregular in their attendance'!)

I'm sure some more will join us (of course having members with over 10,000 posts on the board can be quite daunting to a newbie ;))

Hm, who's been scaring off the women?  I mean I have a history of doing that but I don't think its my fault ;) I thought Kenny's buddy Felicia becoming so popular was just one example of girl geek chic being all the rage these days.  We neeed more nerdy girls!

Well hopefully with the holidays over some regulars will come on back and we'll get a bit of new blood into the pool (wait, is that gross?)

I'm sure more will join in at some time.  The last couple weeks I've actually gotten a lot of new member requests.  Several bogus, trying to sell us something, but some genuine.  We'll see if they start to participate.  But, as long as we have have our solid core group checking in most days, I'm happy.

MAYBE...If Rico takes off HIS shirt and does the SULU...that might work!
I agree though, I love our core group of nerds. Best decision I made was to join this group and post regularly. I even like sparring with X! :) You guys are a terrific source of support too.

Bryan's been removing his shirt for years. I credit that with the fact we have any girls at all! It's also the reason most of the pictures I put up have me covered head to toe in ski gear. Don't want to scare anyone away!

Now why would you think I would like to see Bryan in a skirt.. I'm a gay man attracted to men.... Men dressing up in woman's clothing is not a gay thing.. it's a cross dressers, transvestite or transsexual thing.. which I am none of. :)

OK, OK, we were trying to entice women back to the boards (would they like Bryan in a skirt?) but seem to have wandered off all over the place and ended up under a scotsmans kilt with Kenny and Al...

Moving on...

If the core group is the TrekSF warp core as Rick suggests, does the addition of a new member to that group constitute a warp core breach?

It would be interesting to see a bar chart, of active members to the occasional posters.
There are even a few that seem to be in an elongated orbit - they stop by only once in a while.

Sorry, guys - we might be pulling the ladies over to the Anomaly boards.  ;)  (But you're welcome there as well).  Honestly, I don't think the shirtlessness is a factor, but I could be wrong.  haha.

I've been absent for quite a while, but I do want to get back into the swing of things on all of the forums I'm on.  Sort of an unofficial resoltion.  So, you may be hearing more from me as I catch up.

I think we need to work out some TSF/Anomaly 'crossover events' like in some of our favorite series shows (Eureka and Warehouse 13 come to mind).  That way, we can share the forum/podcast experiences of those two communities and perhaps the cross-pollenation will increase the membership in both!

If we want more female geeky goodness, we have to search the Undiscovered Country and ivnite them in.  (okay, corny I know but I couldn't resist).

Hello to the male dominant forums!

I am a girl! Yay! It was my inspiration for joining the forums. I think it was when I was listening to one of the past podcasts and Rico said something about the forums losing their female population. I know that I am only one woman to add to the few women on the forums. You won't scare me away whether you wear or don't wear clothing, skirts, shirts, or dresses, or Kilts!

I try to get on here as much as I can. I just joined last month so give me some time.

Hope you all are enjoying this lovely winter weather. Looking forward to the sun and being able to see over the 6ft snowbanks in NH.

Be Safe, keep up with the laughter and the fun!

;D

Ditto.  I just have an elongated orbit.  ;)

Although, on an all too serious note, you might have some female lurkers who feel intimidated.  Especially since a lot of female characters in sci-fi and fantasy are often just turned into sex objects.  Some female fans feel the need to prove themselves, either by making herself into an object, or aggressively showing that she doesn't need to.  Women can be weird that way.  It's okay that I say that, I think, since I am one.  Women are a lot less confident, in general, when it comes to their geekiness.  In some ways, the idea is that it's easier and more acceptable for men to like science fiction.  Personally, I like to believe this is changing, and that female fans are really coming into their own.  But it's not something that will happen overnight.

Certainly not here.  We accept all sexes, races, creeds, colors, national origins, sexual preferences, and both vanilla and chocolate lovers, without reservation or hesitation. ;)

Title: Re: New Members
Post by: spaltor on February 16, 2011, 07:39:47 AM
No, not here.  This is a very open and welcoming community.  I'm speaking in generalities of fandom and geekdom as a whole.

And actually, I was just now having this conversation at work.  See, you have to realize that being a fan is different for women.  Men can like a show and enjoy it for it's story, and also proclaim the hotness of a given character and no one bats an eye.  When a woman is a fan of the same show, and proclaims the hotness of a character, suddenly she's no longer taken seriously as a fan (again, generalities).  And many male fans assume, and will even accuse, that she's just in it for the eye candy or the attention of male fans.  Especially if she, herself, is attractive.

Further to that point, you have to think about it like your first year in college.  If you hang out with a girl (friend or potential girlfriend or whatever), and she sees posters of scantily clad women all over your walls, you're probably not going to be spending much time with that girl in the future.  Women see images of female characters as sex symbols and think, "Okay, this is not a place for me" and go elsewhere.  I think that's why there aren't more women than game - because the female characters usually have incredibly large chests and wear practically nothing.  We don't need to see boobs - we have our own.

Again, generalities, of course there are exceptions to everything I've said.  And I'm not bashing anyone or anything, or start any arguments.  Just trying to explain part of the female mindset from my own experience.
