So, the new SyFy series "Defiance" starts tomorrow. This is also tied into a new MMO game too (haven't tried that yet). I certainly will be giving the TV show a try. Looks interesting to me.

I watched this last night. I think it was actually pretty good. Very different than from what I expected. Amy and I both said.. we will see what comes of it. I like having such a broad universe in this show, it's fun looking at the different races and cultures. Throw a little Mad Max in and you have Defiance. Not bad.
Just finished watching the pilot, and I have to say I think it's actually really good. I was thinking going into it that it would be just another less than par scifi show, with no real depth, predictable story, but lots of just action and snappy crappy dialog. But I quickly was interested in the Universe. Right off the bat you're just kind of thrown in, and it's very obvious that there is a lot more to this universe than we are being told. It really feels like a thought out world when you step in to watching it.
I had a few little gripes, a few moments I thought were kinda forced, and character moments I didn't think fit, but overall especially talking about a pilot episode it was really good. So being that this was a pilot I'm willing to forgive a few little plot points. And we all know how good shows can get given time to develop further. So I'm very excited to see where this show goes.
So my non-spoiler review recommendation here is it's a great beginning to a show, and I recommend everybody watch it. I'd like to get some discussions going on some of the more finer details, so WATCH IT!!!
OK, I guess I'll record tonight's repeat and see what I think.
Thanks guys.
Got it queued up, thanks Rick :-)
I started watching it - only about the first 20 minutes or so. Hasn't grabbed my attention yet, but I will still try to get through the pilot. It has an interesting kernel of an idea.
Like I stated before pilot are kind of a hard sell you, just involving the viewer into the universe of the show, introducing characters, and trying to give the right essence for what a show will be. I thought this one did a pretty good job compared to many other pilots I've seen that really fell short. And even after bad pilots we've seen shows really come into their own. So I think there is a lot of hope for the shows future. And to be honest I think it's gonna be really cool seeing how they shape and get us involved into the world as it goes along. It definitely didn't feel like they just gave us everything off the bat, and I'm excited to see what more will come given time. And I definitely like the premise and idea of the culture they are building for it.
I liked it! I thought it was kind of simple and one dimensional characters but the effects are great and premise interesting.
Yeah the characters weren't all that deep, that's why I had issues with some of their motives during the episode. Probably my biggest gripe on the show so far.
I didn't believe the sudden change of heart by Nolan towards the end. They didn't build it up enough to make him ever seem like he actually cared for anything but himself and his daughter. And his daughters sudden reaction to run away when he did go back to help, yeah that didn't fit either. Didn't believe in those character choices.
Can't say I was all that drawn in by any of the characters. They all were pretty one dimensional agreed, but I think there is potential for them to develop. It was a bit predictable overall, especially towards the end, but I'm not gonna judge that so much till after I see more (I've made attempts at writing pilots myself and it's really hard to make it original, awesome, and involving into the universe. So I cut it some slack).
The teenage angst felt forced, and I don't really care for the political aspect of the towns people. Thought that was kinda boring and unfortunately it's looking like we'll have to see more of that in the future. (And goody, cause I'm *thrilled* with another Romeo/Juliet story, cause that's so original...)
Overall though I think it set up the world very well, and interestingly enough that I'm excited to see the next episode. I do love the premise, and love the culture of the world that we've been thrown into, though it's got some rough edges I hoping will smooth out with development.
Also I have been to St. Louise and don't recall all the massive cliffs! :o

We all know how terraforming can be! Some times you get cliffs. ;)
Well I've recorded it so I'll let you know what I think when I get round to watching it.
Watched the 2 hr. premiere last night and pretty much enjoyed it. The funny thing about it to me is it felt a bit like a video game - so I can see the tie-in to the game already. The characters were ok and the story I thought needed a little more detail. The Nolan character seemed pretty Indiana Jones/Han Solo to me, but I liked him. Some effects looked really good, others seemed a bit mixed. But I'm intrigued enough to keep tuning in to see what happens next.

He was Han Solo and Mal Reynolds! And his alien chick sidekick is River Tam, it's STAR WARS meets Firefly!

You know the video game feeling is something I really felt too. I thought it gave the world a large scope overall. Maybe made it a little less realistic in some ways too, but I don't think it hurts it to have a huge history and universe tied into a game, cause is helps build that world, and lets face it games are frequently enough pretty complex these days.
Just finished watching it.. I really enjoyed it.. it did it's job of entertaining me and making want to come back and watch more.. so kudos to Defiance.
I can watch this on Hulu but just streaming through my computer not through my playstation. So I will be watching this very soon.
They have the pilot up on SyFy.com, so I'll try and get caught up before tomorrow night's episode.
On another note, has anyone tried the game? I have two friends playing it on PC, but $60 seems a little steep without some kind of demo available.
I forced myself to sit through the pilot - although I wasn't caught up at first, I am starting to warm up to the series. I'll stay with it for the present.
I enjoyed the second episode. At least they provided an explanation as to why St. Louis looks like northern Arizona. :)
I enjoyed episode 2 as well, thought the pace was a lot better than the pilot.
I really enjoyed the pilot. I was watching it on my 17in laptop screen but still thought it looked really cool, and sure there were predictable moments but I enjoyed most of the story. I liked seeing Julie Benz again and I wasn't that familiar with the lead actor but I thought he did a good job. I don't know why but I really enjoyed the daughter character, don't recall her name, and I liked how she was writing things in her journal and not doing it in English. Good mix of alien species also. Looking foward to watching ep. 2 this weekend.
Second episode was pretty good. Still enjoying the series so far.
I wasn't too impressed with the pilot, but I enjoyed episode 2 far better than the pilot!!
Yes, I'm still on board with this. It took me two or three hits to get through the pilot (too slow in places) but then went trough episode two immediately afterwards.
I think (as normal) the pilot suffers from having to both set everything up and come to some sort of real conclusion by the end in case they never come back. I think they managed it just about OK for the most part but it was only the ending that really sucked me back in for the follow-on.
Episode two was a much easier watch as the hour just slid past without me really noticing. Episode three is queued up on the DVR.
(We get this on Tuesdays, the day after the US I believe. Finally, another show we can all watch in close-enough-to-real-time to discuss.)
Really enjoyed ep. 2. Old St. Louis was cool. Really looking foward to #3.
It's recording as I type!
So episode 3! Thoughts?
To be honest I felt a little like I was watching a video game this episode. It kept reminding me of playing the first Mass Effect game. If you've played it you will know which part I'm talking about?
I liked the episode, but I felt like they wimped out a little (not with the obvious cliche moments, those I'm letting slide with just an eye roll). I felt like they made the spirit riders and their alien culture to be too humanized when they really could or should have taken it further.
Not really sure what to make of it. I'll rate it as OK but I wasn't as taken with this one as I was with episode 2 although I find it hard to put my finger on the reason why. It may simply be because this was a little more self-contained and I'm waiting for more information on what happened in the past and why.
There were parts that pushed me (mentally) out of the episode thinking 'game!' but as I don't play these games I may have been a bit wide of the mark.
Well, it had elements of DUNE (The yoga with a knife scene at the start and the spice trance bit), ALIENS (Including stealing the helmets directly and a chestburster)Starship Troopers (it's a Brain bug that looks like a giant vagina!) a weird scene of a guy stroking his running shoes (as a runner, can't say I have ever done that), and a lot of other bat shit crazy stuff. I thought it was awful but I couldn't look away. This show has no idea what it wants to be. And the mayor chick is up for reelection already?! What's she been in office 2 months?! I am going to stick with it but Jamie was rolling her eyes about the show last night, and i can't blame her.
Yes! I completely forgot about the re-election thing but that had me almost incredulous with the length of term these people serve!
I guess it may have simply been a 'bait the politician' type comment that everyone was making but, if it was, they went nowhere near far enough to telegraph that to the viewer. I also found it odd that the spirit rider would even have known that (or be bothered enough to comment on it) but I guess he could have picked it up in town.
Totally agree with both you guys. Does it seem to you two like there is a lot more going on behind the scenes that we are not seeing on screen? It's like a lot more time has passed in their world and developments like the spirit riders being involved with the town, but it's like we're not seeing these developments having happened.
And on the topic of time passing in some arcs it's like months have passed, and in some it's like days. I think they are missing opportunities not building up the characters and their place in the universe, I would like to see more cultural confrontations and prejudices as that seems like what the show should be about (I mean come on we have a bunch of humans and alien races in one place, seems obvious to me).
I felt like this one just jumped in and expected us to be up with what's going on with everything. I would agree this episode missed the mark, but I'll keep watching. I still think the show has potential.
Yeah, this last episode had me wondering if I was going to continue or not... ugh.
I think the show has a problem with writting, direction, and has no idea yet what it wants to be. It's a hot mess, exceedingly derivative, but it doesn't shy away from being so. It's a riot!
I am still working my way through the 2nd episode. The fact that the albino alien wife is not hard to look at has kept my attention so far.. ;)

There may be lots going on behind the scenes but there's also a lot that's gone on in the past few years and most of it hasn't even been alluded to yet. Partly I'd simply like to know how we got to where we are but more than that, I think we need to know quite a bit more in order to understand what we're looking at.

Starting to really enjoy the series. About a month of episodes in now and it's been pretty good. Definitely on my TIVO season pass list.
Don't know, this last episode felt really weak to me, but I'm still watching Revolution and Defiance is definitely better than that show. I'm starting to lose hope in it though after this last episode, but I'll keep watching. There's just not a lot of quality TV currently on, and me without TV, but just Hulu I'm limited to very few shows these days. I got to take what I can get.
I liked the last episode because it gave us some info on the mayor and her sister's background.

This is awesome news. It's no Firefly, but it's still a pretty good show. Hopefully they will be able to improve the writing now that they know a second season is in the bag, and that they'll have more time to flesh out the characters.
Woo hooo on the second season..
One of things I like about this show are all the strong female characters. They actually just about outnumber the male actors on the show. Works for me! :wub

Watched the newest episode this AM. Not a very good one IMHO. But I think I missed something at the end:
Why was that baddie unshackled in the prison bus at the end? I lost the bit of dialogue, so didn't hear the reason.
I thought it was interesting how they are exploring the idea of 'polyamory' in Defiance.
It still bugs my how much Irisa is a River Tam rip off.
I'm still watching but at this point I could take it or leave it. It's not getting dropped from the recording schedule just yet but may get crowded out now more shows are starting to come back.
Watching tonight's episode, this has something of The Day of the Triffids about it. I can't quite put my finger on it but its in there somewhere.
Bah! Power cut. Have to record it again now.

I was warming to this, but am now cooling...
Won't give up yet though.
ok, i have seen the show online, because i don't have cable/satellite.( i will wait for those who can't believe that is catch their breath, lol)
i ilke the show, but i feel like i have seen this same stuff somewhere else. it maybe just me, it normally is, lol.
maybe i am just getting post world burn out. i miss the days when sci fi shows were really fresh and new. now the shows i like are all shows like LEVERAGE, CASTLE, and HANNIBAL. i know that is a mix of shows. i think defiance is trying too hard to BG. they want to be sci fi and gritty too. it works once, but twice is pushing it with me.
I am trying to stay optimistic that this show will improve. Wish they would hire the writers that do the HBO series..
Yeah, I watched this last episode while surfing the net on my iPad.....and don't think I missed anything.
Personally I thought the last episode was better than some of the past few, but I'm starting to lose interest overall. I agree I was trying to be optimistic, but I'm losing hope in the show getting much better.
I'm still enjoying it.. it's not a "OMG it's awesome" kind of TV show... yet.. but every week when it ends I look forward to seeing the next episode.
That's true Kenny! But I still miss my "OMG it's awesome" shows. But certainly gonna keep watching it for now.
I really enjoying this show. I'm not cutting people off in traffic to get home to see it, but I'm hungry to watch it each week. It's a damned entertaining sci-fi popcorn show. I never went in expected it to be deep, but it has been fun. I'm not expecting Game of Throne, because I already watch that show. I'm not expecting anything other than fun.
Here is something that I do know. It's developed by Rockne S. O'Bannon.
He didn't lead me work with Farscape, V, seaQuest, The Triangle, or Alien Nation. I'm aboard this to the wheel fall off. This man knows his sci-fi.
Looks like they added a character similar to 'Head Baltar' and 'Head - Caprica 6'...

To be fair, BSG wasn't the first to use that concept. The invisible companion was seen far earlier in Farscape and if Rockne is copying anyone, it's himself.

In comparison though I don't ever see those two characters in Defiance being as awesome and enjoyable to watch as Crichton and Harvey. Harvey brought so much to Farscape and to Crichton and Scorpius as characters.

Harvey was awesome... and named after Harvey, the giant invisible rabbit that probably was one of the first invisible friends of some note.

There's a lot of homage to just about everything geeky.
I say with Farscape make it to the end of Season 1 and you will be hooked. The last few episodes of season 1 is really when it gets good, and it only gets better into season 2 and beyond.

Maybe I'll check it out on Amazon. Thanks
I'm still hanging on with Defiance. As the other guys said, it's not 'amazing' but it's not put me off either. I'll certainly give it the first series to see where it goes and the possibility that O'Bannon pulls off another Farscape with this is not completely impossible. We'll see what happens.
(For some reason, it's skipping a week over here. Is that due to US scheduling?)
Yep, I'm still enjoying Defiance too. It's taking a little while to get going but I like the characters and setting. Easy to stay with it since they already announced a second season will be coming too.
Only Farscape season one is available on Hulu or Hulu Plus.
On episode 3 of Defiance. Its only available on Hulu web only. Which is better than nothing when you don't have cable.
If you have Amazon Prime, you can watch all of "Farscape." And don't forget to check SyFy for their programs. All of "Defiance" can be watched there now.
http://www.defiance.com/en/series/video/2639565 (http://www.defiance.com/en/series/video/2639565)
Defiance is uptodate on Hulu too, not having cable myself it's the only way I can watch stuff, and SyFy has been really good about putting Defiance up next day (if only they'd do that for all their shows).
I'd still like to see a little more history from this show although that's perhaps more of a personal preference than a criticism of what's being presented.
As it is, we seem to be pushing forward with their 'story of the week' approach and I can live with that for the moment but longer term, I think, we either need to see a little more of the arc-plot they keep hinting at or go back and analyse the events that got us to the point we're at.
Hopefully, we'll get to see both :)
I watched about half of the current episode - and started to fade fast. I hope it picks up..I want to like this show, but it doesn't seem to be happening..
I think I'm still an episode behind. I haven't looked at last night's yet.
Next up for me is episode 4.
I am all caught up. Still hoping this show finds itself. How many more episodes for this season?
I'm enjoying it for the most part. Up to date and the last couple of episodes I thought were really good.
This weeks grabbed me a little more than most of the others, I think because it touched on the origin story of how the planet got into the state it's in. If they're going to start tying things together a little more now that we've worked through the establishing stories then I might warm to this a little more.
Not giving up by any means but still only luke warm.
Yes it seems to be a compelling back story.
I enjoyed this weeks episode. Starting to get good - hope they keep up the momentum. The back story still is not clear to me, but that is intentional I think. Unless they are steering you to the game for more answers.

Agreed, (with the spoiler) it's finally amping up in the direction I've been waiting for it to go. Looking forward to tonight's episode for what is probably the first time.
Just watched this 2nd to last (of the season) show. I enjoyed it, but one thing annoyed me:
I almost gagged when they started to play that version of Cindy Lauper's 'Time After Time' to the alien girl wandering in the forest!
I had the exact opposite response I really liked that cover of it. So much so that I downloaded the entire Defiance soundtrack.
It's weird, but I really like this commercial even thought they play it too much during the show.

They should do product placement for sunblock with those albino aliens.. :0
Just watched the season finale. It was very good! There is finally a payoff on watching this show (IMHO) - and I am looking forward to the next season.
Love the albino lady - what a cool character. Like her even more now that she polished off the 'madame' of Defiance.
I wonder how the new mayor will get out of this pickle - having whacked the Earth Republic guy?
I was watching tis on Hulu and got behind on it. This week they removed some of the episodes I hadn't seen yet so hopefully it shows up on Netflix.
The game is on sale at Steam for like 13 bucks. Gonna try it out.

Does the game also require a monthly fee? I still need to watch the season finale on my TIVO.

It was pretty good Rico - and I have been skeptical all season.
The game is free to play, but you can buy more slots and stuff with real money
Just watched and enjoyed the finale. Only 11 months until season 2! Maybe I'll try the game in the meantime.
If its going to be 11 months it should pop up on netflix then.

I have it on the DVR - will watch on Friday.
Good start to season two. I really enjoy this series and glad it got a season two. I'm planning on watching that new series "Dominion" too that I recorded on my TIVO last night about angels and demons.
I watched the season premiere - not crazy about the show, but I will continue to watch. I must say that it is quite risque..

Risque?? Pete - don't you watch "Game of Thrones?" :)
I didn't say that Risque was a bad thing.. ;)
LOL! Did you watch season one of "Defiance?"
I did! Proud that I stayed current on something! :)
Anyone else staying on top of this? Not too bad - but not great. I really like the Godfather like albino alien drama.
I actually love this show.

Are you playing the game as well in parallel?
I like the series a lot too - ever since it started. Got a different vibe to it.

not this season, but I should
I am not a gamer (not since DOS days!), but I have been wondering about how much more you can pick up about the Defiance world on the game site.
I am falling way behind in this show. Anyone else keeping up still?
I just need to watch the season finale. Cool show!
First three now shown over here. I'm not crazy about it, but something keeps me watching. Seen two so far and while I could live without some of the more obvious blood and gutsy bits, I want to see where this goes.
I still have the final 5 to watch...and the Dr Who's....and numerous other shows...
