Watched "Flying Leathernecks" starring John Wayne last night and was thinking it would make a good season one Picard / Riker episode:

"Picard has to take charge of a routine away mission that is suddenly attacked, after grim reports from the landing party indicate it is overwhelmed and beyond the protection of the ship.

Upon arrival, he determines his number one, Commander Riker is not prepared to put his men in harm's way knowing that many may not return."

Original Leathernecks story line from IMDB

Major Daniel Kirby takes command of a squadron of Marine fliers just before they are about to go into combat. While the men are well meaning, he finds them undisciplined and prone to always finding excuses to do what is easy rather than what is necessary. The root of the problem is the second in command, Capt. Carl 'Griff' Griffin. Griff is the best flier in the group but Kirby finds him a poor commander who is not prepared to the difficult decision that all commanders have to make - to put men in harm's way knowing that they may be killed

OK, see if you can guess the movie this episode is based on...

The Enterprise is sent to investigate the fate of a remote planetary science expedition not heard from in over 20 years.

Upon arrival Picard discovers what appears to be a lone survivor and Data finds a kindred cybernetic life-form with more extended abilities than his own.

His host urges the landing party to depart but it is too late. Picard soon learns the true danger that roams unseen and fights to keep him from leaving the planet alive.

Or how about this one...

On a diplomatic mission to transport the delegates to babble one, the bridge crew are all stricken with a sudden and debilitating sickness that leaves them clinging to life.

Is this sabotage, an act of war, or the replicated fish dinner?

One thing is certain, unless a skilled pilot can be found to circumvent the raging ion storm outside that has dragged the ship off course - all souls are doomed to be lost.

I like this idea for a game, but am drawing a blank...  :(

Both are well known movies that we have discussed on the forums before, maybe even reviewed.

Ah ok, I thought they were John Wayne films.  :)  Explains why McClintock or The Quiet Man don't fit...  :)

First one is Fantastic Planet.

er, Forbiden Planet - Correct!
That would be a cool episode to see how Picard deduces and deals with Morphious's ID.

I think if it were the TOS crew, Kirk would try to talk his way out like he did with NOMAD.
He'd have it wagging it's tail and licking his hand, lol!

The other episode is based on 'Airplane!'

D'oh!  Forbidden Planet - right.  Great movie (lousy memory on my part).
