Title: The Avengers - Live Action Movie
Post by: Geekyfanboy on June 18, 2007, 10:35:23 AM
A day ahead of the release of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Marvel Studios has commissioned work to begin on bringing another comic book series to the big screen: the superhero team of the Avengers. The news comes through Hollywood Reporter, who reports that the Studio has slated Zak Penn to write the script for the live-action adaptation which is currently titled The Avengers.

Penn’s most recent credits include writing the screenplay for another of Marvel’s properties, the upcoming The Incredible Hulk. It’s still unclear which characters will be part of the film. The original Avengers lineup from 1963 included Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Ant-Man and Wasp, but the roster has been expanded in recent years with Spider-Man and Wolverine joining the group. With most of those characters either currently being used for feature films (Spider-Man) or in the process of having their own (Iron Man and Thor), it may make it less likely that they’ll be a part of the story. It would certainly complicate the casting process. However president of Marvel Films Kevin Feige tells Geek that having their own production company now will make creating an Avengers movie easier due to keeping more property licenses in house.

'Iron Man' Writers Want Hulk To Be 'The Avengers' Villain
Published by Shawn Adler on Thursday, October 9, 2008 at 5:51 pm.

Hulk vs. Iron ManEverything in the Marvel Film Universe is leading to the eventual superhero tag team-up, "The Avengers," with Iron Man, Ant-Man, Thor, and Captain America all fighting side-by-side. What possible villain could compete with that?

"The Incredible Hulk" director Louis Leterrier told MTV News this past June that he didn't think any villain could, and suggested that they use a hero instead: his.

"Iron Man" writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, who themselves may be writing another Marvel movie in the near future, couldn't agree more, they told MTV News, insisting that everything is building towards making The Hulk the villain in the eagerly anticipated 2011 movie.

"I hope 'The Avengers' embraces that," Fergus said of having the Hulk as misunderstood baddie. "You don't want like 10 super-badass good guys fighting together. Where's the fun in that? Let's break it off a little. Friends or colleagues who become enemies is always an interesting thing because you know it's based on love and friendship and that's always the worst thing to have turn bad — is someone you actually care about and someone you actually believe in."

Hulk, of course, has fought nearly every Marvel hero at some point in the comics, and because he already had his own movie, wouldn't need to be set-up in the new one. In fact, all the hard work is already done.

"I left the door open for whoever's going to direct 'The Avengers' with our last shot. Edward [Norton] and I, we consciously decided to make the last shot of the movie when he opens his eyes and he smirks at the camera," Leterrier told us. "Is he enjoying it? Is he malicious? That's what's great about Edward. You don't know if he's a good guy or bad guy. He's always on this edge and we've been sort of surfing that edge, that very thin edge during the entire movie."

Recall, also that Downey Jr. as Tony Stark appears to General Ross at the very end of "Hulk," a scene Leterrier called the first scene of "The Avengers."

Sign Stark and them up for more, Fergus said.

"I personally like when good-guy characters have to fight each other," he said. "Good guys going against good guys who both believe in an issue is way more interesting than a villain clearly into evil and I like when former friends become committed enemies."

Little rumor here, but seems likely given Joss Whedon is directing this movie.

A casting rumor: www.Mania.com (http://www.mania.com)  is reporting that Morena Baccarin ("V","Firefly") has been seen visiting a comic shop and purchasing "a bunch of Avengers" comics in between her filming sessions for "V". The actress was reportedly asking the store workers to specifically point out comics with the Wasp in them. Baccarin as The Wasp? "The Avengers" is scheduled to hit theaters on May 4, 2012.

Cool.  :)  I can see her as The Wasp.  In fact, the more I think about it, the more I'm impressed by the idea of her in the role. :)

Yep, I agree.  The Wasp is suppose to be a former fashion model and always dresses in style.  Morena would be a great choice.

The Avengers Start of Production Press Release & First Photo!
Source: Marvel Studios
April 26, 2011

Marvel Studios has released a press release on the start of production for Marvel's The Avengers as well as the first photo from the set!

Production has commenced today in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Marvel Studios' highly anticipated movie "Marvel's The Avengers," directed by Joss Whedon ("Serenity") from a screenplay by Whedon.  The film will continue principal photography in Cleveland, Ohio and New York City. Robert Downey, Jr. ("Iron Man," "Iron Man 2") returns as the iconic Tony Stark/Iron Man along with Chris Hemsworth ("Thor") as Thor, Chris Evans ("Captain America: The First Avenger") as Captain America, Jeremy Renner ("Thor," "The Hurt Locker") as Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo ("The Kids Are Alright") as Hulk, Scarlett Johansson ("Iron Man 2") as Black Widow, Clark Gregg ("Iron Man," "Thor") as Agent Phil Coulson, and Samuel L. Jackson ("Iron Man," "Iron Man 2") as Nick Fury.  Set for release in the US on May 4, 2012, "Marvel's The Avengers" is the first feature to be fully owned, marketed and distributed by Disney, which acquired Marvel in 2009.

Continuing the epic big-screen adventures started in "Iron Man," "The Incredible Hulk," "Iron Man 2," "Thor," and "Captain America: The First Avenger," "Marvel's The Avengers" is the super hero team up of a lifetime. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster.

Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1963, "Marvel's The Avengers" brings together the mightiest super hero characters as they all assemble together on screen for the first time. The star studded cast of super heroes will be joined by Cobie Smulders ("How I Met Your Mother) as Agent Maria Hill of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as Tom Hiddleston ("Wallander") and Stellan Skarsgrd ("Angels & Demons," "Mamma Mia!") who will both reprise their respective roles as Loki and Professor Erik Selvig from the upcoming Marvel Studios' feature "Thor."

"Marvel's The Avengers" is being produced by Marvel Studios' President, Kevin Feige, and executive produced by Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Louis D'Esposito, Patty Whitcher, and Jon Favreau. Marvel Studios' Jeremy Latcham and Victoria Alonso will co-produce.

The creative production team also includes Oscar nominated director of photography Seamus McGarvey ("Atonement"), production designer James Chinlund ("25th Hour"), Oscar winning costume designer Alexandra Byrne ("Elizabeth: The Golden Age"), Oscar winning visual effects supervisor Janek Sirrs ("Iron Man 2," "The Matrix"), visual effects producer Susan Pickett ("Iron Man," "Iron Man 2"), stunt coordinator R.A. Rondell ("Superman Returns"), and four-time Oscar nominated special effects supervisor Dan Sudick ("Iron Man," "War of the Worlds"). The editors include Oscar nominated Paul Rubell ("Collateral") and Jeffrey Ford ("Crazy Heart").

Marvel Studios most recently produced "Iron Man 2" which was released in theatres on May 7, 2010. The sequel to "Iron Man," starring Robert Downey, Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow as well as Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson and Mickey Rourke, took the number one spot its first weekend with a domestic box office gross of $128.1 million. To date the film has earned over $620 million in worldwide box office receipts.

In the summer of 2008, Marvel produced the summer blockbuster movies, "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk."  "Iron Man," in which Robert Downey, Jr. originally dons the super hero's powerful armor alongside co-stars Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow, was released May 2, 2008 and was an immediate box office success. Garnering the number one position for two weeks in a row, the film brought in over $100 million its opening weekend and grossed over $571 million worldwide. On June 13, 2008, Marvel released "The Incredible Hulk" marking its second number one opener of that summer. The spectacular revival of the iconic green goliath grossed over $250 million in worldwide box office receipts.

Bryan, you certainly should try and catch Thor anyway cause it's a great film. And the second Hulk is also a great movie, like everything Marvel since that one. I support anything Marvel Studios is doing cause of their track record from The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, and X-Men: First Class. All great films.

No matter how many times I read bits of this thread, I always expect it to be discussing the exploits of Steed and Mrs. Peel!

Without a comic book background (and possibly because I'm not American), I'm always so-so about these types of movies yet when I get to see them (usually on TV) I really quite enjoy them.

In one sense, I guess, I'm probably a better audience for them than some of you comic geeks since I have no concept of 'the way things are supposed to be' yet the concept never quite grabs me.

I've been dying to see the footage that was screened at D23 about a week back.  Been scouring the Net for a trace of it.  (Al - how the heck did you get to see this?  You need to send an audio comment into the show about what you thought, etc.)

Anyway, there are some descriptions online of what scenes and things are shown in the footage.  Go to the link below for info on what was shown.

http://insidemovies.ew.com/2011/08/20/avengers-footage-d23/ (http://insidemovies.ew.com/2011/08/20/avengers-footage-d23/)

P.S.  Cap has never really been big on hiding his identity much.  So, I doubt his mask will be on all the time in the movie.

Rico,
Joyce and I are D23 members, which got us into the Expo each day an hour earlier than non-members. So, the day of the Walt Disney Studios panel, we got there nice and early, then waited in line for about 2 hours. Not bad really. Our seats were up in the balcony area, but still very awesome seats! I'll record an audio tonight and send it off to you! :)

You know it! JJ brought action, adventure, sci-fi, family and sexiness together in prime time. "Covert Affairs" owes a lot to "Alias".

Looking forward to the trailer.  A lot of anticipation buildling for this movie.

BTW I picked up the first season of Alias and watched the first two episodes.  Seems really good so far, and really looking forward to continuing with the season.  I am completely spoiler free as well, having no clue what the story or characters are about either, so it's all new to me.

I'm still holding out hope that the first battle the Avengers face together is against the Hulk. I know that Loki is supposed to be the main "big bad" but I really think that the best way to bring the team together would be as a united front called to get the Hulk under control.

I don't want them to fight the HULK. I just want him to be a part of the team. I do see what you mean by a good way to unite the Avengers and there was that part at the end of The Incredible Hulk with Tony Stark and Ross so it's very possible. But come on! Do any of the Avengers have a hope in getting the HULK under control?? He would SMASH them all!!   :old_bash:

Hawkeye, Black Widow....and as a main guy Iron Man wasn't as well known before the movie became such a big hit. Of course to comic fans he was, but not to mainstream folks.

The Avengers in the comics have had A LOT of secondary characters over the years (Vision, Wonder Man, Wasp, Ant Man, etc...) .  Although the movie looks to include mainly the big league guys, there are still some lesser known ones like Chris mentioned.

Same thoughts about Cap's uniform.  Personally I prefered Cap's 1940's uniform.

This morning I read somewhere that the movie is being renamed here in the UK to avoid people getting confused with Steed and Mrs Peel.

I had always been a DC guy, but the build up to this has me stoked!!!!!!!!!!!
The best thing is, when the Avengers makes a billion at the box office, DC will wake up and we'll FINALLY get that AWESOME Justice League movie!!!

First, we need a decent contemporary Superman, Flash, Wonder Woman, et. al. movie.

Problem is that would take DC actually getting their act together and figuring out how to intertwine their movies. And get people who can actually make good movies. Problem I see now is Superman Returns and the Green Lantern were not great. And the Batman films though good I just can't see that universe that's based on a realistic reality of high concept technology (and not superpowers or aliens) working with the other DC universes.

Personally I enjoyed "Superman Returns" although I admit it was more of a homage (spelling?) than a real sequal.  I mean it takes place after "Superman II" but it really just hits the notes of the first film and kind of branches off slightly.  But still I liked Routh's portrayal of both Clark and Supes and I thought the special effects were great.  I got chills during the scene where he saves the plane and sets it down in the baseball stadium and the crowd cheers for him.
Green Lantern ... ehhh ... I did'nt despise it.  Thats about the best I can say of it.
I do love the Batman films, but I agree with Sheppard, they are too *reality* based for a Justice League film.  Still, one can dream.

Yeah, I enjoyed "Superman Returns" quite a bit too.  One of the troubles for a JLA film is I think the characters are harder to pull together in a way in just a single film since the team is really so powerful.  But for now, my hopes are with the Avengers.  I've heard if the movie does well, Joss wants to do another one and make it more character centered and a smaller type of film.

I'm in the enjoyed Returns boat too. I really enjoyed it. It was truly in the spirit of the other films and that's probably why other people didn't like it. It's one thing to remember something as fantastic, but to see it years later and it not have that same feeling kind of colors things.

I think the nostalgia and new were in perfect balance and kept the core of the character together. The acting was also great.

As for a JL movie. I don't see that happening any time soon because of the number of people that would need to get paid to get it out.

I didn't dislike Returns, just found it lacking.  I think the next Superman film needs to feel like a movie made for 21st century audiences, not like something that could have just as easily been made in 1983.

Can't believe the Avengers film is opening so soon.  They're really marketing the heck out of this...four separate Avengers titles in the comics, Avengers mini series,  plus a huge crossover "Event" title starting next month called Avengers vs. X-Men.

CAN NOT WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE!!!!!
I used to collect comics very heavily when I was younger (I'm 45 now) and the Avengers, while not always my absolute fav's, always had a special place in my heart.  I am VERY ready for this movie.  Only thing though :

I grew up on Marvel comics.  I like what Robert Downey Jr. has done with the Tony Stark role, and he now *is* Iron Man/Tony Stark - but - he is NOT the Tony Stark I remember from my collecting days.  I always hear people comment that Downey IS Tony Stark.  To which I always ask : Really?!  I did'nt always collect Iron Man.  But I used to have enough of them to be familiar with the character and I must say I do not recall Stark being this eccentric.  Please, if anyone else who collected these books in the 80s/90s remembers differently I'd love to know.  I dont know if its me remembering it wrong or what.

Just to clarify, I LOVE what Downey has done with the role.  To me in the movies he IS Tony Stark.

Just come back from The Avengers. Spoiler free report below, ive put it in a spoiler tag just in case no one wants to read anything.
Ok so spoiler free, the film is bloody fantastic. Joss pulls it off with witty banter, great action direction and beautifully shot (for a action film). My main concern was too many characters in one film but you can tell they all leave their egos at the door and let each other have a turn. One of many plus points is they nail The Hulk, his colour is great, he looks like Banner and he has the comic book feel. There is a bit of slight confusion going on from the end of Thor to the start of this but that could be just me. There are some nice connections to all the other films. Cap America is nicely up front, Tony Stark amazingly witty (RDJ on top form), Thor pretty cool if not a bit in the background, Hawkeye & Blackwidow very well used (love Scarlett) & The Hulk is bang on. Banner I would say is perfect, slightly nervous with his control but boy he says an amazing line leading to the climax.
All in all a fantastic film that I think you will all love.
I saw the movie at lunch time today, and the screening was packed; much more than I would normally expect at that time on a Sunday!

I LOVED the movie, and it's probably now my favourite Marvel Superhero flick!!

Don't miss the scene in the middle of the end credits!!!!

Yes, it's performed great over the weekend!  I am looking forward to reading about how good it performs this coming weekend in your neck of the wood!

At work this morning I had collegues ranging from 20 to 60 saying they had seen it and enjoyed it!

Slightly changing the subject - though I enjoyed Captain America's 40's costume better I quickly got used to his modern costume.   My favourite costume has to be The Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson was poured into that costume!!!   ;)

Yeah it's called Avengers Assemble in the titles over here. Remember to stay while the credits run you get a tease after the first main credit section.

Two things for those getting ready to see this soon:

First - the 3-D version was converted over, not shot in 3-D.
Second - stay for ALL the credits to the very end.

Yup second added scene (for you USA/Canadian viewers ) it's a follow on from a joke mentioned by Stark during the film.

3-D conversions have a lot of trouble with fast moving, action scenes.  This is one reason for the headaches some people get.  The "brain-trick" they are trying to pull off with the polarized lenses has difficulty when images change fast frame-to-frame.  Pretty common problem.

Great flick. So much good about it but the Hulk and Mark Ruffalo almost steal the show.  LOVED the portrayal of that character...there's some humor about him that we've never seen in any portrayal going as far back as Bill Bixby that makes it the best interpretation of the green behemoth ever.

Whew...3am...I'm getting too old for this %#@$.

It is the mark of a truly amazingly well done sci-fi movie when I can not only convince my wife to watch it with me, but when, after the movie, she wants to watch it again. And the series of individual movies leading up to it. Well, iron man's, at least.

Bravo, Joss.

(P. S. kudos for giving almost as much screen time to the captain's butt as black widow's)

WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW!!!!!!!! THIS MOVIE WAS AMAZING. THE WIFE AND I WENT LAST NIGHT AND WE BOTH LOVED IT. SHE LIKING THOR AND IRON MAN THE BEST AND ME HULK AND CAPTAIN AMERICA. GREAT MOVIE! PLEASE DON'T WAIT TO GO SEE IT BECAUSE YOU WILL WANT TO HAVE MORE TIME TO SEE AGAIN AND AGAIN!
I also agree with an earlier post about Cap's uniform. It really grows on you during the movie. At 1st I was a little mixed about it but it really was pretty cool. I hope they make a new Hulk movie. I would love to see him in another one. Mark Ruffalo did a great job as Bruce Banner.
On a side note we sat in a spot right behind some stairs. And I just want to say why would you want to get up and miss some parts of an awesome movie! Even though it kinda bugged me I was so into the movie that my irritation lasted .004 seconds.

Well, nobody *wants* to leave in the middle of the movie, but when the young boy drinks half of the large soda on his own (before anyone else notices), he needs a few bathroom breaks.

Our family now has a great trick for saving money at the theatre:
1) timeshift working hours away from friday afternoon
2) order last matinee tickets online (avoid lines)
3) late lunch for me
4) wife feeds kids right after school
5) they get seats, I get 1 large popcorn and drink combo
6) enjoy the movie!

Hope you all enjoy(ed) it as much as we did!

Saw The Avengers this afternoon. What an incredible movie. Had a great Mix of everything in it, the Action was great, and the humour well timed. The Personalities of each of the Characters came out well also. I thought Captain America did a great job, as he came off as a guy from the 40's in todays time.

When they give these numbers, do they take into account the increase in ticket prices - even though HP7.2 was just a while ago.  I would be more interested to know the number of tickets.   Still impressive for 3 days.

Yeah, I've noticed sound issues quite bit lately.  My guess in some cases is some theaters haven't upgraded their speaker system to handle some of the new digital audio and it's poorly balanced.  That plus those DBOX seats Mark mentioned - those seem to make the whole theater rumble!  :)

WOW.    INCREDIBLE MOVIE!!!!  Well done, Joss &  team.  This one was not only knocked out of the park, it was knocked out of the freaking solar system.  So many cool moments; a film hasn't inspired this kind of outright joyful laughter and glee in a long, long time.  This film felt like an epic love poem to all comic books.  I feel an overpowering urge to go see it again tomorrow!   ;D
Right from the first introduction of Jackson as Fury back in Iron Man, I KNEW this was going to be an Ultimates movie.  Ultimates 1 & 2 are two of my all-time favorite books, and this film managed take some of the coolest elements of both & create something familiar yet awesomely new.  There absolutely HAS TO BE an Avengers 2, featuring THANOS!  There just HAS to be!  PLEASE! I hope I can go see this again on Sat. with my mom and nephew. My nephew called me this past Sat. and said 'take me to the Avengers movie.' He really likes these kind of movies so I really do want to take him so we can talk about it. He's 17 so It's cool he likes some of the things I do so we can have chats about them.
And someone said earlier about Captain America being like he's still in the 40's. I really like that part about his character in this movie and was even talking about that to the wife after we saw it.
Great movie and can't wait to see it again! And i don't care if it's 2D, 3D, or 3D IMAX!
Oh, yeah, I was talking about the movie to one of my managers at work and he ended up taking his wife to see it in 3D IMAX. He said they both liked it.

Just got backed from a 3D matinee and loved it!
I am still laughing at the scene when Thor and Hulk are on top of the crashed machine in Grand Central and hulk punches him just because!
What did Hulk say in his only line in the movie?  The theater was laughing so uproariously I couldn't hear it.
I thought that maybe it was "puny human" but I couldn't tell

I belive it was "puny god".
Thanks...by far both of the biggest laughs in my screening were generated by the Hulk
When he pops Thor as an afterthought and when he beats the everloving crap out of Loki.  I'm not quite sure how I feel about Hulk understanding the difference between a god and a human as well as being able to articulate it, but only a small quibble.
The answer is simple.
The hulk is still Banner. He knows what Banner knows and it's totally within the context of the character to understand. Also, had he done the same to a human, it would be a stain on the concrete after the first slam.

I don't recall asking a question.  It's just an interesting choice that I'm not sure I agree with, in my opinion, to have the first line the Hulk says in three films imply an advanced level of cognitive understanding of cosmological significance, just to get a laugh.  It's an hilarious scene that stands on its own, considering many couldn't even hear it.
I'm happy to report that my Mom and Nephew both loved the movie. And of course the wife and I enjoyed all over again. I asked my nephew as we were leaving I said from 1 to 10 I rate it a 12! What do you rate it and he said 13! If there wasn't some great looking movies starting to come out on the 18th I would probably go see this again in Imax or something. But Battleship this weekend and MIB 3 next weekend.
It was Puny god that the Hulk said after smashing him on the floor. LOL Also my nephew said something interestng about Hulk punching Thor. He said "revenge is sweet." On the helicarrier Thor smashed into Hulk when he started toward Black Widow. So I can see where that would fit. Some of my favorite parts are all the Hulk parts,  & when Cap jumps on the car where the cops are wondering what to do and Cap gives them orders and they are like "Who are you to give us orders" and Cap takes out 3 aliens so the cop starts giving the orders Cap just gave him! Also the part where Stark is thrown off his building and his suit flies to him. How awesome was that!!
Looks like a 10 disc Blu-Ray set of Marvel films is coming to celebrate the Avengers success!  Very tempting to buy this one.

Still doing incredible business in theaters, Marvel's The Avengers is on its way to DVD and Blu-ray later this year. Though an official date is still unconfirmed, an interesting tease has shown up Amazon for something called the "Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One - Avengers Assembled" Blu-ray collection. The tentative list of content for the ten-disc set reads as follows:

• Marvel's The Avengers (Blu-ray 3D and Blu-ray)
• Captain America: The First Avenger (Blu-ray 3D and Blu-ray)
• Thor (Blu-ray 3D and Blu-ray)
• Iron Man 2 (Blu-ray)
• The Incredible Hulk (Blu-ray)
• Iron Man (Blu-ray)
• Bonus Disc - "The Phase One Archives" (Blu-ray)
• Collectible packaging with exclusive memorabilia from the Marvel Cinematic Universe

The listing also includes the below image, which hints that the set might mimic the briefcase that Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury uses to transport the Cosmic Cube. Whatever is under the S.H.I.E.L.D. cloth, though, is said to be revealed on July 15th.

After seeing the movie the first time I told the wife that I was going to buy the "Super Duper" version when it came out. This isn't what I was thinking about, but WOW! I already have all the movies except Iron Man 2 so I doubt I would end up getting this. Of course if the price is right I could change my mind.

Not gonna double dip. I already own all the films except for Avengers and that's one I wouldn't mind having a special edition version but I'll probably just settle for the regular. I rarely ever actually watch the special features on discs more than once anyway.

Just saw this tonight.  The whole family enjoyed it.
I don't know much of any of the back stories - so I think I missed a bit - and have a few questions:
Why did Cap give the $10 to Fury?  Did they have some sort of a bet from an earlier movie?

Who was that at the end of the movie?  During the credits - they played a short extra clip.

Thanks
Watched the movie last night and had to finish tonight since my wife had to go in early today and she wanted to watch it with me. It was AWESOME! I watched some of the extra's like all the deleted and extended scenes which were fun to watch. And check out the gag reel, very funny.
I didn't watch the special 90 min disk yet but it covers each Marvel movie starting with Iron Man and ending with Avengers. It has a total of 7 featurettes.
The only thing missing from my home viewing was a better sound system. Visually it was awesome just not the best sound quality.

The 90-minute blu-ray is neat. Kind of a nice history of the Marvel movie universe and how they did it. I loved the "Item 47" short, if that's what a SHIELD TV show is gonna be like, count me in. Very meta. My kids loved the gag reel too, Will..."Coulson! COULSON! You will be AVENGED!" Very funny. The movie itself look incredible, awesome transfer. I have a pretty good sound system and the sound is booming, man. A great demo bluray, especially the battle.
