What the hell, may as well start a thread about ST-3 before Into Darkness is even released. :)
Star Trek 3
In case you were wondering what J.J. Abrams is going to do with those Star Wars movies he was making before he got the actual Star Wars gig, it's now been confirmed that he will at least produce the third Star Trek movie. It's still at least conceivable — though, let's be honest, probably pretty damn unlikely, given how big an undertaking Episode VII is likely to be — that he could end up directing it as well.
I feel like I've heard he wasn't even initially supposed to direct Into Darkness.
Any chance Joss Whedon could take over Star Trek 3?
Joss is locked in for more Avengers.
I talked about this on the podcast this past weekend. I'm certain besides producing a "third" Trek film that JJ will be involved a fair amount - especially if number two turns out to be successful.
Interest in Star Trek 3 will definitely depend on how well Into Darkness turns out. I'm not getting my hopes up just yet.
man, this guy has a lock on geekdom for the next few years. :)
Time to get this party started! Trek 3 may start filming next year.

So which story will they re-hash in this one? ((oops! Did I say that outloud?!))
Looking forward to the wild speculation starting.. :)
I want to see Harry Mudd or Gary Seven.
I want them to hurry up and get the movie done, but I have to wonder why CBS hasn't even explored the option if a new Trek series. It's pretty weird how the film rights and movie rights got split up.
Remake "Spock's Brain" :)
I could see January Jones or someone like that saying "Brain and brain, what is brain?!"
She can say anything she wants to me, man.
Ditto on that January Jones comment..
Oh bollocks he's saying we might get JJ back for part 3.
No way, not if Star Wars is still planned for 2015. We all know he can't multitask did movies, it's why we waited 4 years for Into Darkness.
Star Wars is planned for 2016.

That says filming in 2014 followed by release in 2015.
This new article from today running with the news still claims 2015 is the date.

Wasn't the 2015 date part of the Lucasfilm sale announcement?
You're right Chris, I don't know why 2016 popped into my head when I trout of the scheduled release date. Having said that, I think 2016 is more likely.
Especially considering the pre and post production on Star Wars movies of the past.
That said, JJ doesn't hand to direct the next Trek film. There's plenty if talented directors in Hollywood, some them are even Trek fans!
My prediction: Episode VII in 2015. Next Trek in 2016, to coincide with the 50th Anniversary.

That would certainly make sense but then is Quinto correct saying they are going to film next year?
Maybe LATE next year, I would say. I think Rico is spot on, they are definitely gonna want to have new Trek product in 2016.
But then again Star Wars is the bigger $ franchise and would be a Bad Robot priority. If they go over on that schedule new Trek would be the likely casualty, or JJ doesn't direct, gets a producing credit, and sticks wi keeping Star Wars on schedule.
Could turn out to be a pretty big conflict for Bad Robot if SW gets moved to 2016. I still don't believe JJ will be directing. Lets use history as a barometer...it's time for Quinto to step up!

"Into Darkness" was filmed over a year before it's release. They could easily film the next Trek late next year and release it in 2016 still.
I thought this was going to be about "The Search for Spock". ;D
I would line the next one to heavily feature Klingons or Romulans or both. We've wasted long enough.
I think its time they moved to a new villain. Make a new race up and get some fresh ideas.
Fresh ideas sound good to me.
To be fair, Into Darkness only had a previously used character villain and one scen taken directly from a previous film. Otherwise there were no similarities at all to TWOK, remember the Genesis device was the McGuffin of TWOK and make no appearance in the new film.

Sounds reasonable...
Star Trek 3
Simon Pegg is optimistic the third film could be shot in 2015 so that it would be released in 2016, the franchise's 50th anniversary year:
"I would hope so. It would mean we could get it out for the 50th anniversary, which would be extraordinary... obviously, it's all in the hands of the sci-fi gods so with a bit of luck..."

Bryan Singer is a huge Trek fan. Just sayin.
He is too busy, but I'd love to see Joss Whedon direct a Trek film one day.
I just don't want to wait so long for this to come out. Pick one and get started.
Inch by inch we move closer. Roberto Orci in talks to direct...
http://trekmovie.com/2014/05/09/roberto-orci-in-talks-to-direct-star-trek-3/ (http://trekmovie.com/2014/05/09/roberto-orci-in-talks-to-direct-star-trek-3/)
Some speculation on where Robert Orci make take things:
http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Star-Trek-3-Return-Franchise-Roots-Head-Deep-Space-43641.html (http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Star-Trek-3-Return-Franchise-Roots-Head-Deep-Space-43641.html)
Ask any screenwriter and director currently involved in a young franchise and they'll say the same thing. We haven't met the characters yet. We haven't established the universe. Baby steps, etc. It gets a little frustrating because for once you'd like to see one movie without being pressured into seeing another. The new Star Trek seems pretty well-developed, however, so it's a little unusual to see Star Trek 3 director Roberto Orci reveal that there's much to learn about this crew's final frontier.
During a podcast with Humans From Earth, Roberto Orci claims that for the next entry in the Star Trek saga, they'll be going where no man has gone before (spoiler: space).
In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films – especially the 2009 [Star Trek] – was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren't the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie. So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space.
It's hard to underestimate the disappointment in diehards familiar with the series when they saw the first trailers for Star Trek Into Darkness. What was this business about the Enterprise crashing into skyscrapers? What was this cityscape business? Where's the space we were promised after Star Trek? Benedict Cumberbatch doesn't look like any alien I know! It continued during the film, where locating Cumberbatch's "John Harrison" (whatever) meant starting some sort of intergalactic war, the sort of intergalactic war that just fades away and is never discussed again.
The original crew of the Enterprise was meant to embark upon a "five year mission" into space, but so far, we still have Captain Kirk, fratty, inexplicably-unkillable Earth-bound jerk. Orci's promise is to shoot the series into the stars and explore new worlds. That's the sort of thing fans of the original series actually want to see, but because of how the earlier movies turned out, I'm not sure those diehard fans will trust this director to do that properly. The bean counters over at Paramount, who have to be concerned that Star Trek Into Darkness was a big hit overseas but grossed less than its predecessor domestically, probably aren't pleased with the idea of nerding out either.
Can Roberto Orci boldly go where no man has gone before? Or are we getting the same stuff all over again? And is "deep space" too ambitious an angle for a first-time director, specifically one who has only worked on the writing side in a duo with Alex Kurtzman (off at Sony doing Spider-Man things)? We'll see soon, as Star Trek 3 shoots for a 2016 release date.
I'd like to see Andorians in the next movie, or is it time for a completely new alien?
Anyway I agree that they need to leave Earth and get on with their five-year mission.
Yes, take the show on the road.
Merging this with the Star Trek 3 news thread.

This sort of stuff can be disheartening to fans hoping for a great movie in 2016. Director changes and many people over involved in the direction of a product does not always result in quality.

Many films over the years have had changes in directors. It's better that the director is removed before the beginning of shooting rather than the middle as so often happens. I was concerned from the first announcement that Orci was directing and this actually has helped me think that Paramount really does care about their Star Trek franchise. Let's hope for a really good director to be announced soon.

Glad to hear it. All of us would be going anyways - so makes sense.
The Movie looks like it will be fun, and looking forward to seeing it. I will be honest, I enjoyed the first two movies so far, but as well I just take them as a different take on Trek, and what happens in them does not relate at all to the Prime Universe. So I don't really get upset about what they do in this version of Trek, and just enjoy it for a fast Sci-Fi action series. If they touch on some more Trek type themes in this one, that is great, if not I am ok with that, as we have so many years or Prime Universe Trek to fill my need there.
I will admit, I really not much of a fan of Simon Pegg, but I can really see some disappointment in his face and words. In the past he has been very hard on George Lucas in regards to Star Wars, that maybe he is feeling a bit of that in regards to this new Trek, and that people feel he may have damaged it with this new version. Sounds like he really wanted a to make a more Star Trek type movie, but I guess will see how much of those elements make their way to the final product in the end.
I like your look at it Jeff. I too enjoy the movies, but they are not the same as prime. It's ok, just different. :)
I enjoyed the first film. The second left a bad taste in my mouth and I pretty much can't watch it. I have hope that Pegg can do right by the franchise but it's reserved hope for sure. The trailer released does nothing to excite me at all and I'm hoping that it doesn't really represent the film.
Reshoots being done in a couple of weeks with a new character being added. I found an article I'll post the link for. It has the actress from 'The Expanse' shooting the new scenes. Hope this isn't a bad sign. Of course I'll go see it regardless. I mean shoot I just watched Star Trek V the other day just because.

That is a cool effect! Can't wait till July!!
That trailer grabs me much more then the first does, and certainly does get me excited to see this movie in July as well. Still early to tell, but to me, I like they have looked to knocked a bit of the brashness and cockiness off of Kirk. Kirk was always a confident person to me, but also he had his vulnerabilities, and a few scenes to me seemed to touch on it, so maybe the first two movies were a bit of his journey to get there. The Kirk and McCoy friendship seems to be closer to what my idea of it should be as well, which I find encouraging as that really reaches back to the TOS series for me. Will see how the movie plays out when it is released, if they are able to build the characters up a bit more. I guess in this generation of the crew, in their defense they never got a TV series to flesh out the characters and relationships, like the other crews that did movies had. So even though these characters are ones we are familiar with, it is a different universe, so they are a bit different, and we also met them earlier then we had their prime counterparts.
Best trailer yet!
