If you look at the top near the Profile button there is a new "Chat" link. This will open a Java window that you can chat in with others that are currently on the forums. Hope this is a fun new function for everyone! :phone
(Note, you may need to install Java in order for it to function.)
That is great Rico.. I was hoping you would add a feature like this...
nice, good idea, thanks
Some seem to be having trouble getting this to work. Make sure you have the latest version of Java installed. If you are still having trouble. post your browser version and settings here and I will try to help.
Get the latest Java installation software here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_xpi.jsp
You'll need to have this installed to run the CHAT function on your computer. Note this is the Windows Java version, I'm sure there is a Mac version out there if that's the system you run.
Seems to be working for me! Sound like a lot of fun!! :)
I need help guys.. I still can't get Chat to work. I am using the lastest version of IEÂ and I have installed and verified that I have the lastest version on Java.. but still all I get is a grey screen with one button at the bottom that says float on it. I then tried my Mozilla Firefox browser and get the same thing... Any ideas??
Have you tried Firefox Kenny? I use the latest Firefox version and Java installed. When I first ran it I had to allow it permission to run something, can't recall what it said exactly. Some kind of security setting I think. I'll keep looking into it on my end too. Sorry for the troubles, but I think some have got it working.
Neat! Seems to work ok on my WinXp machine. Using Firefox here too. Only way to browse baby!
Hmm, I haven't a clue Kenny, sorry. And Rico, sorry to be rude (if this is rude) but in the last statement of his statment Kenny said "I tried it in Mozzilla Firfox browser and the same thing". So your question is kinda irrelevant.
Yeah I guess I"m the only one having problems.. I thought maybe it was a firewall thing.. but I'm turned it off and on and still nothing. I'll continue to play with it. it has to be something very simple.
Just tried to get into Yahoo chat and it failed.. something is up with my java...
Well got my yahoo chat to work with java.. but still nothing with this chat.. hmmmm
Sorry I missed you tried it with Firefox too Kenny (you are using the lastest Firefox in Win XP I hope). I have chatted with others that have it working, so I know it can be done. I would go to add/remove programs and remove any Java references. Then start up a chat. When I first did that in Firefox it asked me to install a plugin. After I did that, I just restarted Firefox and it all worked great. Hope this helps some. Nothing more on my end I can do as far as how this functions. It's just a small addon to the forum packages. No real settings in it or anything.
hmmmm.... maybe it is simpler than that... try to get on the chat and just wait for a minute or 2. you might not have given it a chance to load... ???
well I removed java and went to the chat room and got the same screen.. I then went to yahoo chat it it requested that I download java and I did so, but went back to the chat room and still the same grey screen.. oh well guess it wasn't meant to be.. maybe I can chat from my Mac at work. Thanks for everyones help.
I'm really thinking now it's more a security setting issue for you. When I first ran it under Firefox I got a box that I had to check yes to in order to allow it to run. Some type of app. from another company pops up. See if you can try another Windows machine sometime Keeny - or the Mac like you said. Sorry it's giving you troubles.
I just loaded on my work PC under Firefox. Here's the first thing that pops up that I was talking about that you have to accept. The second picture is chat running. Does take just a few seconds to load up. Do these look familiar?

Nope didn't get anything like that.. it's just a grey box with at "float" button at the bottom middle. Never asked me to approve anything. I've tried it on both my desktop PC and PC laptop.
Again, if you are trying it under Firefox a Java extension has to load. You will first see a green puzzle like piece and it will ask you to download the extension - in Firefox. I think this is a bit different than the normal Java install program. I have tried it on a couple of my home systems and now my Dell PC at work. No trouble on any of them for me. Did you try your Mac at work yet Kenny?
this has to be a security setting... nothing else would make sense. you tried all the latest versions of everything and it didn't work so I don't think it is a software issue.
Well it doesn't work on my Mac at work either.. I swear it must be me.. I just am not meant to chat on these boards. I get the same screen that I get on my PC.
And yes Rico I was using the latest Firefox on my PC at home and got nothing.
wow, that sucks... i have no idea whats wrong. i hope you figure it out.
I'm using FireFox on Linux. It works. If you have the NoScript extension for FireFox, it'll block Java too.
well when I tried Safari on Mac it wouldn't work.. but now I'm using IE for Mac and it works fine... strange...
weird, im glad you got it to work though.
Yes, I'm pretty sure it's a security thing too. Java is a bit funny with some setups. Kind of once it's blocked, it's hard to get it back. IE for Mac? Wow...didn't even know that even existed. But then I'm not a Mac user.
Rico, I think you should change the name of the room to TrekSF
Well, I just tried the chat thing, and it works fine. I think that you have some sort of firewall on you router network, that's why in won't work on either of your comps Kenny.
Macs do funny things with browsers. It kinda screws up some flash player pulgins also.
it could be the router, but the second computer was the computer at Kenny's office.. so i doubt that was it.
O, well, maybe Kenny has bad aura surrounding him then. ;D
it could be, i was listening to one of the podcasts and he said that Ent was cancelled because he liked it so much... funny stuff.
Problems have been discovered by fanatic and myself while chatting. That chatroom is not a privte Treksf chatroom. It belongs to another site for some reason. Im sure Rico is looking into it.
I have to do some more digging, but I think anyone once in can set up a private chat room, with a password, etc. We should just make it simple and set room names to treksf and password also treksf. See if that keeps others out.
Ok, I've created a room called treksf. After you click the CHAT link above, just type in this to join the room:
/join #treksf
I haven't password protected the room yet....but I will if we need it.
i see, thats a good idea
Thanks rico.
Sounds good. I really thought that it was private to this specific forum. O well.

It is basically private now. You just need to join the room as stated above. I'm going to try and automate that process sometime soon so when you click the link it takes you right to our room.
OK. Also, was it hard to integrate the chat thing into the forum? Because with PhPBB, everything has to be made specifically for PHPbb.
I think it was a plugin for smf forums
it works fine for me. what do u mean?
No, picard, I mean for forums it's kinda hard to put in a program that isn't meant for the forum.
oh, ok. i dont know what PhPbb is.
It's a forum program, and so is SMF, but it's hard to explain.
The chat program can be used outside the forum as well.
ah, where do you download the program?
Go to http://phpbb.com or http://simplemachines.org
I dont know where the download for the chat is.
k, thanks
You have to have a web serevr, though.
what do u mean?
K, in order to have a forum you need to have somwhere to host it on the internet, just like you would with a website, called a webserver, if you want a great free webserver go to http;//www.byethost.com (http://http;//www.byethost.com).
oh, im not trying to make a forum, i just wanted to download the the chat program.
Uh, I dont know that link. I thought you meant forum programs.
i realized, its alright. i dont really care that much.
Well I finally found a work around with my forum chat room problem.. still won't load if I press the chat button but if I go to www.everywherechat.com and click on there chat it takes me to the lobby where I can then type /join treksf and it takes me to our chat room on every computer I have. It's a little work but it gets the job done.
YAY, I am going to try this solution and hopefully y comp won't restart.
Thanks for the tip, fanatic. That chat room is a pain.
