Title: T-Shirt poll
Post by: Rico on May 12, 2006, 05:39:36 AM
Well, it looks like I may have found a place to get some shirts printed.  I'll have to get a group printed up and then sell them, ship them myself to those that want one, etc.  The main thing I need to know is what size would work for the most people.  I am really hoping to limit sizes to large and extra large.  I would hope that would cover most.  But vote above on what you would need.  The design would still be the "Spock logo" for the Podcast in a large size on the shirt back and just some text on the front (show name and URL).  Probably either in white or light grey.  Let me know if you are still interested and of course vote for your size.  Thanks.

I voted large.  A bit too big for me, but that's the way I like T-shirts.

I think Rico will just use the shirt from last time, Picard. And ya, I'm a large and I think it should fit me well, but I'm still growing, and I hope I don't grow out of it too quickly if you order large ones, Rico.

haha, we should get matt james on here.

bak to the shirts, the white is prob a better backdrop for the spock logo, cause the light grey just seems to be a wierd color wit the logo.

I agree the shirt sould be white with the spock logo.

I know I keep saying this, but I do plan to still do this folks.  I have a couple of new ideas though.  One thought is to get one of my very artistic friends to draw up a new logo for the podcast.  Something less "Spock centric" that Cafe Press and other places won't have issues with printing up.  That way you can get whatever color shirt/style, size, etc. you want.  The other way to go is to get some printed up myself in a few sizes and sell them myself and ship, etc.  I'll tell you, I'm leaning heavily to the new shirt logo idea.  It would make things much more simple for me at least.  But if you guys really like the Spock-like logo I could still do that.  Post your thoughts here....

Post by: Picard_delta_5 on June 12, 2006, 12:37:26 PM
ok, a few things... Star Trek doesnt care who using any of their ideas, as long as they dont make a profit off them... and they are referring more to people like "New Voyages" selling their episodes... I don't think anybody would  care if you make a shirt with a pic of spock on it...

Second, i think this new logo idea could work nicely, but you have to show us all the possible logos every step of the way... i'm sure they will be cool though...

3rd... TrekSF needs a catch phrase or something, and we need to put it on the shirts... something like "Star Trek fans for life"

how are these ideas?
Title: Re: T-Shirt poll
Post by: Rico on June 12, 2006, 03:47:50 PM
Well, CafePress disagrees with you at least - and me too.  I got one shirt printed there awhile back but they sent me an email saying they couldn't print more due to possibile infringement.  They are just scared.  In any case, I've tried two online places that setup your shirts for others to order off of - CafePress and one other.  Both wouldn't allow the Spock design.  So again, I print them on my own or do a new design.  If I go with a new design I'll share it here.

I like the catch phrase idea.  I think I may make it a new contest soon for the podcast!
Title: Re: T-Shirt poll
Post by: skip/dro on June 13, 2006, 09:56:13 AM
for the catchphase, i was thinking rico's title/nickname would work
"Star Trek Lives!"
it's simple enough, and it shows a point.

also, if we wanted to get rly creative "Trekkies4Life" could work, but i like the previous one better.
and as lont as the logo is very treksf, i'm fine with it. it just has to be uniform with everything esle.

Stupid cafepress. The internet is like littered with spock and trek stuff that hasnt been in violation. I would still hope to get the Spock logo. :vulcan

We all know that cafe press is wrong, thats bullsh** that they wont make the shirts... Rico, you should tell them to call up paramount and ask them if its legal... I guarantee you that paramount wont care....

Uh actually Picard, they can say whatever they want when it comes to copyright infringment, and they will be right no matter what they say. And I think you are quite incorrect about Paramount not caring. They are the same with every other company, so I think its still illegal to use their products to make money.

O, and Rico, I wouldn't mind if you had to make a new logo, although I have grown used to and fond of this one.
Title: Re: T-Shirt poll
Post by: Rico on June 14, 2006, 10:29:44 AM
I did email back and forth a bit with Cafe Press but got no where.  Risky is quite right - their company - their rules.  And it's very true Paramount wouldn't care about a few T-Shirts out there.  If anything, I'm promoting Trek even more for them.
Title: Re: T-Shirt poll
Post by: Geekyfanboy on June 14, 2006, 02:24:57 PM
Yeah you would think that.. it's free advertising.. but it's the same with TV and Movies. If anything is on screen and it can be recognized we have to get clearance to show it. So if someone is drinking a Pepsi and you can see the can we have to get approval. If we can't we have to blur the shot. Anything not cleared has to be blurred. I always thought it was stupid because we are showing their product in a good light so you would think they would like the free advertisement... not so.

I know your T-shirt thing is on a much smaller scale and I'm sure Paramount won't mind, but I understand why places won't print the T-shirts.. they are just covering there butts. It's doesn't mean I agree with them... :(

well, if rico told paramount, they might try to make a few extra bucks and charge him. i mean, they wont be afraid to boss rico around considering he was nice enough to confront paramount about the subject.
Title: Re: T-Shirt poll
Post by: Riskygodfather on June 15, 2006, 08:11:48 AM
I don't think Paramount would have time to bother with an issue like this. They'd probably just shoo you away.  And I think that the only reason that companys don't allow free advertising, is because they know if you use it without their permission, they can sue.

I am sure it would be no prob from paramount. Screw cafepress and find some local t-shirt joint. After they are made you pack and ship em urself.

well...
ther's a place next to my karate dojo tht does team jerseys and shirts, and it looks like no one is ever in ther. it looks like a local t-shirt joint.
idk, maybe rico u should message me, but i'll chek em out next time i'm there
altho, next time i'm near my dojo is after summer vacation, so maybe just deal wit the shirt stuff somewhere else.
but if it's still a prob then, just email/message me.

Rico,
Let me know if your friend can't help you redesign your logo. I'd be happy to create a couple of vector designs for you, if your friend can't help with that. Free of charge.

I noticed that the poll seems to swing in favor of large and extra large T-Shirt sizes  :-\  Is there any chance you might add a medium size for those of us who can't wear the large sizes?  I'd proudly don the Treks In Sci-Fi duds if I could buy one closer to my size. I guess all I'm asking is that when you get back to this project, consider us little Hobbits and Elvin folk.

what if you get proof that it wouldnt be copyright infringement.... u could email someone at paramount, im sure they would tell you that its perfectly fine to make the shirts, then just print out the email and show it to whoever u want to make the shirts for you...

:o I have to  to defend my geekiness here guys  ;)   .
Pleeeeeasse give me some "geeky benifit of the doubt". I wasn't referring to height, it was girth I was trying to illustrate by using the Elves as an example. I'm a tall, but thin person (for all intesive purposes...an elf) so I used  Hobbits and Elves as a clever, albet nerdy illustration for those who would wear a medium size (hobbits would have to wear small...but I'm sure they could wear a medium as pajamas). To recap, Hobbits are short and chubby- Elves are tall and skinny  ;D . As you mentioned, there aren't any chubby, short elves in LOTR, as any proud geekling knows. Take no offense to my post, I just had to prove I knew my nerdy generes    ;)
...But, I digress--please carry on Gentlemen.  :)

this is just a response to jen's earlier post, i too wear a medium, and i kno delta five does too, so ther's three mediums rite there.

nd to jen's comment bout elves nd such, wouldnt it be possible for an elf to just eat a lot nd get fat? nd isnt a dwarf related to an elf?
Title: Re: T-Shirt poll
Post by: Jen on July 28, 2006, 10:17:24 AM
Hi Skip/dro...In Tolkin's world, I don't think Dwarfs are related Elves...I do remember reading in the novels that Hobbits are related to Elves.  :)

Title: Re: T-Shirt poll

Sorry last thing that's off topic. First of all, Dwarfs and Elves have a long lasting... distaste for each other. They aren't related at all. Second thing, Eleves were the first creatures on middle earth, and they are very trained and such, so I doubt any of them would eat enough to get fat, plus they prbably have super metabolism, so I don't think they can even get fat.

Very true Risky,

And to skip: no, i wear a large... shirts shrink, and when they do a large fits better than a medium... i suppose i could wear a medium but i didnt vote for it....

New QUESTION....

I may go the preorder route with the shirts.  Would folks be willing to prepay for a shirt, then I place the shirt order?  That way you get the correct size and all that.  The alternative is I order a certain amount of each size.  What I would probably do is have a couple of weeks of preorder, then place the shirt order.  Once the shirts come in, I can ship them out.  Give me your thoughts on this.
